Sao Tome and Principe - oil boom to make it the next Kuwait?

Just seen an extensive BBC report on this tiny little country, which is predicted to be the next Kuwait if massive oil reserves are discovered. Other countries in Africa are reported to have large potential oil reserves as well, and are also being wooed by energy hungry western countries.

I met the Energy Ministers from there last year at the AAPG conference when they were still very much locked in legal wrangles with Nigeria over the share of the concession areas.

Glad to see they've worked it out. However, the true volumes will only be known once several wells have been drilled and tested. Although geologically there's little going against the area with respect to hydrocarbon reserves. But the majors have to be drawn in by optimistic consultants; I've been on both ends so know :-)

Let's hope the twin island state can effectively combat poverty with their imminently new found wealth and set an example for West Africa as a whole.

I wonder what it's like to live out there, hmmm.......where'd I put those business cards.....
