Salman Rushdie, Courageous Again...

S. Rushdie :nook: :nook: :nook: :nook:

I cannot say this for other guppies, but as far as I'm concerned, Saddam needs to go, and there is no doubt in my mind about it( and thats because of some personal hatred towards him ). However, what I dont agree with the republican hawks is, the way they want to eliminate Saddam Hussein. In my opinion, if the Iraqis are so willing to fight for democracy and freedom, let them come out on the streets and let them fight for it, just like the Iranians, Kashmiris, Chechans, E. Timorese, Indonesians etc did, nobody handed them freedom in a silver platter, so why should the Iraqis get a special treatment, besides freedom comes from reforms and not from an invasion. History has proved it, that to impose leaders in foreign countries has never worked before and will not work in future.
As far as the Rushdie is concerned, I dont think Rushdie could be considered a Muslim voice, for God sake, regardless of origin of country, he is not liked by any known Muslim country. There are far more better true Muslim voices around the globe, who are moderate, and represent the true Islamic values for example Pervaiz Musharaff, Mahatir Mohammad etc.

Fruadiya: Is that it? Any other "factual" information that you are going to provide on why Salman rushdie shouldn't be writing politically inspired column's? or is it just the usual middling answers? BTW? I think someone's waiting in C&A for career advice. :)

midling answers? has he said anything that has not been said? No
he has said stuff tons of ppl have said already, so whats the big deal. His ideas are not new. The fact that he is saying it is new..big deal.

What is your "factual" information. You are cheering him for saying something. Does him saying it give it more credibility, No. Is it ground breaking thinking, NO. He is just pimping his notoriety, and thats fine, but thats all it is. maybe his book business is in slump, who knows and who cares. i certainly dont. You seem to, so enjoy.

Yep C&A has new grads that can use helpful perspective anyday. Def more of a positive impact there than here :)

Rushdie’s views on Saddam hussein shgould have been made 10 years ago when he gassed Halabja while shaking hands with Rumsfeld.

I would say Rushdie’s invective have had a lot to do with the fundamentalist backlash which has mushroomed over the last decade or so. He’s nothing more than a lily-livered whinger who tore into the British establishment and police force in the Satanic verses but went crying like a baby for their protection once he was fatwa’d.

It was quite ironic watching him hide behind Maggie ‘Torture’'s skirts once a threat had been made verbally only :hehe:

Fraudz,

Rushdie and Iran were 20 years ahead of their time. Of course now, Rushdie has turned controversy into celebrity, and fashioned himself to be a freethinking Muslim. After running and hiding for 10 years Rushdie has made a life for himself.

There are many freethinking muslims :) zakaria and hoodhboy being two of them. this is newsworthy not because its anything new, but because it rushdie saying it.

Moona, thanks for a very thought provoking rebuttal to S. Rushdie.
Now go and kill the *******…today you get a bonus target Isioma Daniels.

...errrm as opposed to the rest of us who are narrow-minded Muslim bigots? i think IMHO, as Fraudia has already stated, there are quite a few freethinking Muslims around.

Fraudia, yaar you are assuming that Zakaria and Hoodbhoy always say original stuff, never regurgiate and repeat themselves. When commenting on politics or history lot of it is regurgiation...even your criticism of Rushdie is not new...others have done it before right here on ghupshup.:)

Nadia,

:flower1::flower1::flower1:

A little sensitive today!

There are not many Muslims with the courage to call for regime change. You must admit that this is not mainstream thinking. (except among the Iraqi exile community).

:nahnah:

oops. i didn’t intend to come off harsh, maybe i misinterpreted the comments.
Sorry. :flower1:

:k:

But....

Rushdie wrote a book of fiction? I thought?
