Butt is a good player and has a bright future ahead of him. However, he needs to work on his one major weakness, slashing at the ball outside the off stump. Once he overcomes this weakness we will have a very solid opener.

Saeed Anwar used to be an absolute master of off-side strokes; be it cover drive, square cut or square drive. But at the same time he was way too prone to slip and gully catches. Sometimes he was too casual in that area. Same is case with Salman Butt. He is very good to watch playing off side strokes with perfect timing and grace. What he needs to do is be a little more confident of his own abilities and choose appropriate timing and bowling attacks to curb his natural stroke play. Just like he did with English and aussie attacks. Nowadays he is way too cautious (lack of self confidence and security) and even against lesser bowling attacks of Sri Lanka and India (no offence), we didnt see him playing in a positive frame of mind.
Good luck to him though. He was the only Pakistani opener that I can recall who succeeded in his first tour down under (that too on debut). We will need him in England for sure (because Bob/Inzi arent gonna Imran farhat more than two tests to fail consistently).

Not to take any thing away from Furhat, its just his luck to be on the scene with too many idols.
Butt should be given time to continue to grow in experience and flourish as an attacking opener.
