^Xeno says kachoomar means crushed. So its a crushed salad. (Wouldn't that be chutney / salsa by any other name? ) Hmmm, I don't think I would call it salad either.

Hmmm, well the ingredients in tabouleh are very very finely chopped and crushed...but it's still considered a salad.
In my opinion, even if a chutney contains crushed fruit (mango, apricot, figs, etc)....it tends to have a longer shelf life than a salad. Perhaps that's one of the key differences between a salad and chutney. Chutneys are like sauces that contain various ingredients that help preserve them....they last longer than a salad.
Also, a salsa is a sauce especially if used as a dip. HOWEVER...at the same time....it can be considered a salad.....because the word "salsa" is derived from the word "saline". And "saline" and "salad" are related words (according to Wikipedia).
Don't worry about the technicalities......just enjoy them both.
nehi tho. in pindi n islamabad...the only lettuce type i found was probably what u described but that is NOT romaine...n it had a bitter taste.....dunno how some places import salad there. Yeah they have the normal cucumber/tomatoe onion lemon stuff...but i always tend to miss lettuce there :)
even on the airplane, pia gives u a cabbage salad, no lettuce!!!!
Afro.I'm in Isloo for an year now n you can get iceberg from regular itwar bazar...I LOVE iceberg. Infact you can get a variety of salad leaves n veggies there...:)

^ There u go, never let it be said there is not salad in Islamabad.
Now we r on the subject, there was this little store near an outdoor food vendor / restaurant place (it looked quite trashy - the food place). I can't remember if it was totally just a green grocer store or half / next to one of those stores that sell foreign food. Anyway, they sold these "Strawberry Tomatoes" in little nets. They were small tomatoes and they were really tasty and sweet, almost like strawberries. I think they were grown in Afghanistan in that non-soil liquid stuff. Amazing.
Just thought I'd share that.
