:k:
I see more complications for the Americans in the future. They dont have much of a reason to stay back in Iraq, now that Saddam has been captured. Having pushed the europeans and the canadians out of the iraqi contracts the external debt forgiveness will not be as forthcoming. This means America is planning for a long stay in the country, perhaps with an eye on the Iraqi oil and to protect Israel. OTOH european/world/internal oppostion to US presence in Iraq will increase on both these counts. Since Saddam has been captured everyone will wants US troops out of there.
So if they pull out, they might leave behind an unstable country with every chance of another Saddam cropping up and after having spent so much money they'll get nothing in return. If they don't, then they'll face huge oppostion from within and outside America and keep incurring the costs of staying there. Catch 22 for US.
ChthonicPowers, hopefully this capture does lead to a more stable Iraq, but there are other groups with in the ‘resistance’ other than Saddam supporters. Just today the 'resistance' killed at least 16 Iraqis with a car bomb outside a police station. This ‘resistance’ does not care about the Iraqi people but only about hurting the U.S. interests which is a peaceful and free Iraq. Today’s victory is another step in that direction.
I am so relieved to hear that he was not captured in India as predicted by some.
Well they finally caught the person responsible for 9-11...

Yes, and that is what the Iraqi people are or going to say.
The American's have killed tens of thousands of Iraqi's in the last nine months, more than any group in this period, and have tried to outdo Saddam in the killing stakes. No wonder the Iraqi people have always chanted "Death to Bush" and "Death to Saddam", and in many instances been killed by Saddams' and Bush's soldiers.
Saddam's capture completes the Royal Flush.

Good. Because this proves that the Iraqi freedom movement is not just backed by the soldiers loyal to Saddam but it encompasses and represents the wishes of the people of Iraq

Do you honestly believe that? If you do, then what do you have to say about US forces killing innocent Iraqi civilians? Did they care about the Iraqis in their pursuit of destroying strategic locations for Saddam? If they didn't, why should the 'resistence' be judged any differently?
One tyrant down, a few million to go.
I bet Bush's next target is gonna be the Terrorist Pretzel Network for their assassination attempt on him.
President Bush to Address Nation at Noon EST
To address today’s victory.
Iraqi quote from today:
Ayet Bassem, 24, walked out of a shop with her 6-year-old son.
“Things will be better for my son,” she said. “Everyone says everything will be better when Saddam is caught. My son now has a future.”

But most are happy…
BAGHDAD - Celebratory gunfire rang out across the Iraqi capital, radios played festive music, drivers honked their horns and passengers on buses and trucks chanted “They got Saddam, they got Saddam,” as word of the former dictator’s capture spread from car to car and shop to shop on a sun-filled Sunday afternoon.
U.S. troops stationed around the country cheered when they heard the news and held back as Iraqis fired their guns in the air. Iraqi journalists gave U.S. officials a standing ovation and cheered wildly when video of a captured Saddam was shown during a news conference announcing the arrest.
But not everyone was happy and many said they wanted proof that the man in U.S. custody is the real Saddam Hussein.
“I heard the news, but I’ll believe it when I see it,” said Mohaned al-Hasaji, a 33-year-old who owns a cosmetics shop on Baghdad’s bustling Karada street. “They need to show us that they really have him.”
Outside his shop a paper boy sold copies of Sunday’s edition of Shaheed, or the Witness, a weekly newsmagazine whose cover story was graced with photos of Saddam and banned headline that asked “Who’s the real Saddam?”
At the Palestine hotel, where foreign journalists and American contract workers are staying, Abil Daoud was sad. “We lost our only hope and now we are stuck with the Americans,” said Daoud, who is employed by U.S. troops as a local security guard. Some called Saddam a “coward” for getting caught. Others were glad he didn’t die a martyr. “He killed my son Mohammed and he tortured his people,” said Halem a-Jassen, 40, as she celebrated in the street.
Members of the Iraqi Communist Party, which was banned and persecuted under Saddam’s rule, passed around bags of candy and raised red flags outside their party headquarters.
A Shiite cleric named Azhad al-Faili thanked the Almighty “for ridding the world of the tyrant.”
Ayet Bassem, who wore the traditional black cloak of religious Muslim women, was overcome with a sense of relief.
“Things will be better for my son,” she said, clutching the hand of six-year-old Zenalbadin. “My son now has a future.”
With random gunfire in the streets, she said it was time to go home and leave the shopping for later.
Worried shopkeepers hurried to close up their businesses early and get home before the shooting increased.
Among them was Yehya Hasson.
“I’m very happy. Now we can start a new beginning.”
if i was saddam hussain, and if i was on the run, id keep atleast some ak47 and some gernades. They would never take me alive, and if i die, i would die in a gun fight.
Highyly Dubious but extremly important piece of history.
This is good news :bhangra: (Is this smilie a no no in World Affairs?)
