In Pakistan, in the province of Baluchistan the water table is falling by 3.5 metres per year. The capital of Baluchistan, Quetta, will run out of water in 15 years, according to Richard Garstang, water expert with the World Wildlife Fund.

But about 80% of irrigation water is wasted through leaking pipes, unlined channels, evaporating reservoirs and canals. One quarter of all irrigated land has now accumulated salts, rendering it useless for cultivation, for example two million hectares have been lost to salinity in Pakistan.

Pollution

450 cubic km of wastewater are discharged into rivers, streams and lakes every year. This polluted water reduces the amount of freshwater available. Groups such as International Rivers Network, Clean Waters Network and Friends of the Earth International have been confronting industry over the contamination of rivers.

Solutions

Reducing consumption of water is essential.

Improving irrigation efficiency

Irrigation projects could cut down on the amount of water they use by as much as 80% if drip systems were used. Drip systems deliver exactly the amount of water a plant needs.

Water recycling

Water recycling, especially in industry, will also help cut down on water consumption.

Rainfall harvesting projects

1,500 women from 12 Indian states met together in Rajasthan, Western India for the National Women’s Water Conference in February 2003. They discussed ways of protecting water supplies in rural India.

Villagers in Madhya Pradesh have resolved the problem of heavy summer rainfall followed by months of drought by building small dams and wells, sharing both the work involved, the money invested and the water harvest. Women in Gujarat built check dams and revived old ponds.

Women in Rajasthan have begun to green the desert through community rainwater harvesting projects.

The women who attended the conference fiercely opposed the Government’s proposal to privatise water and resolved to fight to protect it. “We will take our sticks and chase out those who attempt to sell our water to us” one Rajasthani woman said.

Recycling of human waste

Recycling of human waste, rather than discharging it into rivers, will provide valuable fertilizer for growing more crops and will leave more clean water in rivers to be used as drinking water.

Stopping industrial river pollution

Cutting down on pollution from industrial processes will similarly help keep rivers clean and available as drinking water.

Planting Trees

Trees prevent soil erosion and conserve water. Village women in parts of India, for example Orissa, have planted trees.

Water is part of the earth’s heritage. It needs to be preserved for future generations and protected in the public domain by local, national and international law. Access to clean water for basic needs is a fundamental human right. We cannot continue to abuse the world’s precious water resources. International cooperation over sources of freshwater is possible and practicable. International legislation which enshrines the principle of equitable and reasonable sharing of water resources already exists. Similarly international legislation already exists for the control of pollution. Water privatisation is not the answer. A return to the principle of sharing this vital resource is possible and essential.

What about other benefits such as the power production capacity of new dams?

You don't need storage dams to create power. They can be run of the river dams. I doubt anyone in Sindh would have a problem with such a dam on the Indus.

So if this is the solution, why are people insisting on the Kalabagh besides the usual Punjab efforts at domination? There must be some benefits…
With the way the country is growing and the climate as it is, do you really think improving the existing infrastructure is enough to meet future needs?
What a are the projections for the next 15 years? How much will your solution compensate for the increase in demand? How much will the Kalabagh help?

shouldnt we be happy that pakistan is developing ? i am sorry i am not very learned about the provincial politics ... but when i see news dams being built or some other new projects being completed , i feel happy that Pakistan in progressing rather then caring about which province it is in ... arent we a ONE country?

Read my post 84 please. All dams don’t store water. Kalabagh will give total of 4.7 MAF to the irrigation system while 68 MAF is wasted through inefficient drainage system. And once again I will remind you of the importance of water flowing downstream for Sindh.

Who said it such a dam will deal with difference in water levels? I am pointing out what is acceptable to Sindh as such a dam would not further destroy the downstream environment. But its good that you admit that electricity generation is the only real asset to Kalabagh. Hopefully, your govnt will also admit this soon.

MQM urges restoration of water accord

KARACHI, April 3: Founder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Altaf Hussain on Monday demanded immediate restoration of 1991 water accord. In a meeting of the MQM Coordination committee in London water situation in the country, especially for the Khairf season and water apportionment among the provinces was reviewed.

The meeting was of the view that for years Sindh had been deprived of its legitimate share of water and a serious crisis had affected its economy and ecology and seriously affecting the solidarity of the federation.

The MQM demanded that the federal government should immediately increase the quantum of water supply to Sindh in view of its needs.

It was of the view that for making the water distribution just and equitable it was essential to restore the 1991 water accord reached during the coalition government of MQM and Jam Sadiq Ali because it was decided by the Council of Common interest but was illegally suspended by the Peoples Party government in 1994.

Meanwhile, Mr Hussain also expressed concern over rising incidence of road accidents in Pakistan and conveyed his condolences for those killed in accident near Gharo on Monday.

Acceptable to some pseudo-engineers may not be a viable design for producing electriciy. You don't put turbines in little lakes and stream. Oh well it is kind of discuss dam design with someone who has become an odd combo of Mohajir-Sindhi-dambasher-engineer.

antiobl, all you need to know is that majority of provinces have already said no to kalabagh dam. And any storage dam's advantage other than producing electricity will be negligible, while the costs, especially to sindh wil be very high. You don't need to be an engineer to understand this.

antiobl, all you need to know is that majority of provinces have already said no to kalabagh dam. And any storage dam's advantage other than producing electricity will be negligible, while the costs, especially to sindh wil be very high. You don't need to be an engineer to understand this.

Some times you have to take decisions for the benefit of the country.

Dam be damned. Why do you love to spread the cooked up "running water electricity generation theories"? Got any references or again this just another way of shouting autonomy without knowing nothing about the term.

antiobl, do you doubt about the existence of run of the river dams? And any large dam on the Indus is against the benefits of the country and by country I also mean land beyond Lahore.

Pakpatriot, I have already stated why this idea is false propoganda. 4.7 MAF total water to be divided up between provinces is hardly worth the costs to taxpayers, enviornment, and federation. Even pro-Mush Sindh CM agrees with this viewpoint to some extent. He said that Indus delta needs to be saved from sea-intrusion by lining current canals instead of building new ones.

The Mirani and Sabakzai dams, along with dozens of smaller dams being across Balochistan province are not located on the river Indus. They are all for the benefit of the people of Balochistan as a whole.

Pashtunwala and Balochistan are not countries. Both fall uner the jurisdiction of the federal government of Pakistan.

So, no, there is no balance to your argument.
