Revisiting Abrogation

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

you too believe in abrogation as you’ve said, so you are arguing against yourself… the difference however is that for me Allah is free to abrogate His verses whenever He so wishes; whereas you seem not to permit Him to do so unless it be after some unspecified time frame imposed by you

and I can cite commentaries that say it does amount to abrogation… so what is it, my commentators verses yours?..

your link confirms that the first of the two verses is a commandment… (that commandment is abrogated, quite noticeably, in the subsequent verse)…

you have Ibn Abbas’s comment previously cited

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

here are the verses:

[8:65] O Prophet! urge the believers to war; if there are twenty patient ones of you they shall overcome two hundred, and if there are a hundred of you they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand.

[8:66] For the present Allah has made light your burden, and He knows that there is weakness in you; so if there are a hundred patient ones of you they shall overcome two hundred, and if there are a thousand they shall overcome two thousand by Allah’s permission, and Allah is with the patient.

read again.. (slowly this time) and you’ll find why the ratios are different.. as if all this was in any way relevant to the abrogation argument in the first place!!

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

gupguppy,

When my teacher says he requires 6~7 hours of study each week for all who wish to make an A in the course, I take it as his commandment. Then in later part of the course he says if someone even studies 3~4 hours a week on the subject matter, he can make a good grade, I take that as a commandment too. But the later does not go against the former, it only lowers the bar. One cannot argue that just because 3~4 hours are now enough, one cannot study 6~7 hours. Some students still might need that much studying to make an A as they might be slow, like myself.

Another thing to notice in the commentary I linked to is that it gives the number 20 in the first verse significance, citing that it is the smallest band of men where the rules of war can be applied. This is important because in those tough times, the Meccans would abduct any Muslim hanging around and kill him proclaiming its all part of the war. If we abrogate the verse than you will have to forego this interpretation too.

Anyway, I am still looking for Hadiths that supports abrogation within Quran. If the one you pointed out is the best one out there, than please let me know.

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

incorrect example… if your teacher said: ‘the minimum amount of study i expect from each student is six hours a week’ then later says, ‘okay, now the minimum amount of study i require is two hours’…

only someone with his head in the sand would continue to insist that the minimum amount of study remains unchanged at six hours…

PA… ^ please read even more slowly

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

gupguppy, I take offense to that as I am such a student and the example is real.

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

gupguppy bhai jaan i know this is hard for you.. but try to concentrate now..

using the teachers analogy.. the teacher is the one giving the tests.. don’t forget that..

he gives out a general guideline first.. minimum amount is six hours..

BUT he realizes there is always a gupguppy amongst the students so to give a 'handicap if you would.. he says that for the current test a study of two hours would be good too.. kapish?

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

^ no, not for "the current test" nor "presently" but "now" as in henceforth...

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

gupguppy bhai jaan.. الآنَ = Now.. and not necessarily for “all times to come”.. I wonder why you insist on using the ‘henceforth’ instead of ‘presently’ when it fits in better considering the “He knows that there is weakness in you”

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

^ 'now' as in this is the ruling 'henceforth'... similar usage in 2:187

Re: Revisiting Abrogation

gupguppy bhai jaan.. فَالآنَ is not the same as .. .الآنََ

NOW isn’t the same is SO NOW.. u see the difference?
