Retin-A is an acne treatment that also removes wrinkles and improves skin appearance and condition
Retin-A, containing tretinoin (sometimes called retinolic acid), derived from vitamin A, can reduce severe wrinkles within only 6-weeks and completely remove fine lines.
Retin-A acts by improving blood supply to the skin, which in-turn increases the turnover of dead skin cells. Accordingly, new more subtle and younger looking skin appears at the surface. An additional use of Retin-A is to speed up the rate of skin repair after cosmetic surgery.
It's recommended that u use a good moisturizer and in addition a high factor sunscreen.
The side-effects are peeling and redness which usually goes away soon, this is because the blood supply is improving and younger skin begins to appear.
Dear princessjojo.. I can tell you about my experience. I had mild adult acne.. I never had any breakout in my teenage years but started to breakout at the age of 24. Every breakout left a scar on my face. I have few permanent scars that will never go away.
Accutane was the best thing I took for my acne. I don't breakout anymore except maybe 1 or 2 small breakout before starting my period.
Accutane is a powerful medicine but I don't think its as danger as it is hyped up to be. Just don’t get pregnant. The side effects that I experienced were extremely dry lips, red eyes, super dry skin, and rash on both of my hands. Other then that I don't think I experienced any depression. The doctor wanted me to take accutane for 6 months but I stopped after 2 months because of my husband. He had a hard time dealing with the dry symptoms I was having and made me stop taking it L . Anyways, I am free of acne for now and if in future I start to breakout again I would not hesitate for a minute and take accutane again. You should with your doc and see what he says. As far as I am concerned accutane is the only permanent solution for get rid of acne for good.
Thanks Sahar. You said you don't have acne anymore. May I ask how long it has been since you stopped treatment with accutane?
I would recommend it because I think it's a great drug treatment in comparison to some of the other options out there. I would advise starting it when you have 2 weeks where you can sit at home most of the time because the first two weeks you peel like crazy and your skin starts looking worse, since the medicine is surfacing the acne that had already developed under your skin. I did it in high school, and I was miserable during those 2 weeks. I just wanted to cover my face. Then it got better.
I've been using retin-A 0.025% for well over 3 months for general maintenance, I have no specific skin or acne issues. I use it 2 x week with alternating lactic and glycolic acid peels. I had absolutely no reaction to the retin-A even the first time i used it, no flaking, redness, etc. My skin was a little dryer but it tends to run dry because of the climate I live in anyways. I initially started with a pea sized amount for my neck and face but now use as much as if I would a moisturizer.
I'm fairly certain though that the retin-A is causing dizziness, nausea and headaches. For the first while I couldn't make the link and thought it was just a coincidence but now I'm 99.999% sure that these symptoms happen on the mondays and fridays I put on the retin-a. Has anyone ever experienced these symptoms? Should i continue to use the retin-A? I felt super sick last night.

This is the 1st time I've heard about this but that doesn't mean that weird/rare side effect can't happen. I think you should stop using the Retin A for the next month (at least 4 weeks). See if you experience the negative symptoms in the absence of it. If you don't get sick at all in those 4 weeks, then you can be sure that it's the Retin A. In that case, if I were you, I'd stop using it (the dizziness would concern me the most). Just continue with the peels and get glycolic cream for in between the peels.

thanks Paheli, yeh I'll stop taking it and see if it makes a difference. I don't know if the quantity makes a difference because when i first starting using it I didn't have the symptoms but as I increased the amount I put on, thats when I recall starting to feel sick.
