IMO, it is the Palestinians that will effectively shoot themselves in the foot on this issue as well. Israel gives up all its settlements in Gaza after years of saying that the settlements are necessary to provide security. With the withdrawal, we’ll see an increase of Palestinian suicide bombers enter Israel from the Gaza. Israel will say, “See, I told you so.” The Palestinian Authority will not be able to control the fanatics which will play into Israel’s hands. Israel will then have proof necessary to show why dismantling settlments in the West Bank will jeopardize its security. Ergo, Israel has the factural basis necessary to support West Bank settlements for decades to come.
If the Palestinians were smart, they’d do everything in their power to keep the fanatics out of Gaza. They’d prevent suicide bombers from entering Israel from the Gaza. Then, they could say to the world, “see, getting rid of the settlements leads to peace. It worked in the Gaza and it will work in the West Bank.”
Poor Palestinians will just be used and abused again by their own. They are their own worst enemies.
