Retainers are the most important part of the engine that regulates the actual red-line.. the maximum limit of RPM means that retainers/valve springs are lacking the engine rotational speed i-e rotary motion of crankshaft is out-running spring’s elastic/retaining speed.. that results in uncombustible strokes.. at first it can cause missed fires than gaining back the limit with max HP and lesser torque.. the fact that strokes going in vain are actually caused by these two things, valves remain opened during firing stroke and the mixture of burnt air-fuel and un-burnt one.. though non-ideal mixture of burnt and un-burnt fuel can lit up and result in a less proportioned power stroke, but, valve with open seats fails it all the way..

P.S: more powerful springs can increase your RPM, but stock retainers are more safe for your engine’s capacity..

Done an experiment, installed weak retainers with 4 thousandths clearance in valve guides… 1/4th of the RPMs decreased…
