Quiz - Question of the Day

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Incorrect answer. Ball cannot go against gravity. It will settle at center of earth sphere.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

I knew zircon!!

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

^ what is this lady saying?

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

It might in the long run, but for a very very long period of time, the ball will oscillate back and forth between two openings.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Universe is governed by four forces. name all four.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

A

True. The momentum will drive ball past center. Then it gets damped with each swing.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Gravity
inertia
friction
repulsion

:hmmm:

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Gravitational Force
Electromagnetism
Strong (nuclear) force
Weak (nuclear) force

Awesome.

Now an extra credit question just for you.

Scientist believe that all these forces are manifestation of one universal force. They successfully were able to prove that three of these forces are actually one force.

Which is the only force they were unable to unify with the rest?

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Gravitational?

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

In the context of this ptoblem

Gravity - ball gets drawn to core of earth by gravity
Inertia - that is what makes it go past core - it has built momentum. Without friction it will go back and forth perpetually
friction - due to friction at some point it will settle at core
Repulsion - just threw that in since you wanted 4 laws.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Thanks TLK, for some reason I cannot quote your comment but here is the answer. The force that has not been unified with the others is gravitational force. Its at the macro level where as all the others are at micro level and believed to be one force before the universe came into being. Southie, yeah it is gravitational force (and not gravity) from what I remember but let me open the books and confirm it for you :)

Nicely put eastern dress :k:

Southie ka cooler aap ka hua

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

I am learning more here than I did in school :D

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

Funda lady from Islamabad.

I part with my cooler with pleasure!

Next question.

What causes seasons? Why summer changes to winter and then to summer every six month

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

^ the tilt in the earth's axis causes seasons...since earth revolves around sun in an elliptical path so the northern hemisphere is away from sun in winter so it's cold [winter] while the southern hemisphere is closer to the sun so it's warm in there...[summer]

Nice one kkf:k:

The area near the surface of the earth can be divided up into four inter-connected “geo-spheres:”

Name at least two.

Re: Quiz - Question of the Day

well this is an awesome thread !

i would like to add.
we do not know YET whether Gravitational force is unified with the other fundamental forces of nature or not. The other fundamental forces were not unified by US, they were already unified, we(Maxwell for electro-magnetic force) just discovered it and are now able to write equations proving them being connected. You've given an excellent point(their levels of operation) as to why it has been difficult for us to find out the link between Gravitation and the others.

technically, gravity == acceleration due to gravity ;)
