You can read even Quranic ayahs with your period. Some will say to avoid touching the Quran, but you can read it nonetheless. Just place it on a pedestel and turn the pages with a stick. I've seen that done all the time. My personal opinion is that there isn't enough evidence to suggest that you cannot touch the Quran with your period, but if you want to go the orthodox way, even then, there is no rule that you can't recite the ayahs, or Durood or whatever you want.
