Assalamu Alaykum,

There could be two meanings taken from your question. First, whether we should pray the prayers that we have missed in the past. There is a thread on that, which I tried to find but was unable to. You can try to search or may be someone can post it.

The second is whether we can miss the prayers and offer them later. In that sense, there is no concept of Qada prayers in Islam and it did not exist in the time of the Prophet (pbuh). There is nothing that should bar one from offering prayers at the time they are due.

For instance, Quran says:

“O you who believe! when you rise up to prayer, wash your faces and your hands as far as the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are under an obligation to perform a total ablution, then wash (yourselves) and if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy, or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith, God does not desire to put on you any difficulty, but He wishes to purify you and that He may complete His favor on you, so that you may be grateful.” (Al-Maidah 5:6)

If you carefully look at the bolded phrase, Quran has required one to perform ablution when water is not available and they are not ritually clean, and still offer it. Even in such conditions, Quran has urged the believers to offer the prayers.

Some of the narratives of the Prophet (pbuh) show him offering prayers as soon as possible if he slept through the prayer time. In addition, he also mentioned that there can be only two possibilities of such prayers: sleeping throuhg it, or forgetfulness. Of course, one should try to not sleep through it and try not to forget and even then if it happens, one should offer as soon as possible.

There are some elder people who have said that if you have missed prayer in past, try to pray extra prayers every day to complete your bligation. This may take months to years off course. (calculating since puberty)

I think its just one of those things added by people in the religeon (in good intention off course) but no proof that I could find.

From your post it is not clear if one can offer prayer AFTER the prayer time is long gone for any reason.

i.e. activities which make one miss the prayer time altogether, such as a physician performing long operation, pilots etc. Should the person still pray even if the time of prayer is over?

Is it correct if some people pray while riding in vehicles or aeroplane, while sitting in chair with changing directions to avoid prayer become Qaza?

I have heard the Hadeeth about moving back the sun for a Sahaabi by the Prophet (PBUH) who was sad of missing Fajar prayer. Sounds great and we must believe it. But would 't that be known by the whole world also? Or it was an illusion created to satisfy the Sahaabi? (just a side question I have, doesn’t make a big difference for my faith, however)

Now what I understand that only ‘Fard’ Raka’at have Qaza not Sunnat or Nawafil.
