Gujranwala also existed by 641 AD, but wiki mentions here that by the time the Muslims invaded the region Lahore was already a big city.

^ according to albiruni when Muhammad bin qasim came to the area, he enquired why the city was so rich when he came to know it was because of the sun temple he left it unharmed and then our friend ghaznavi came along. :)

Jehlum might be important place in Punjab as it is named behind Alexander's horse. That indicate Greek armies passed near by and probably fought a war in the area.

Interesting, Jhelums history goes back to Mahabharata times, and according to Wikipedia the pandava brothers hid in the salt range.

As far as king porus rule is concerned it was between jehlum and Chenab, and once he was defeated the Greeks controlled most of Punjab.

1) Archaemenid Empire (which was a Persian empire) - Between 558 BC to 327 BC
2) Alexander - Between 327 BC to 316 BC
3) Maurya Empire - 318 BC to 180 BC
4) Indo Greek kingdoms - 180 BC to 100 AD
5) Kushan Empire (Gandhara Civilization) - 100 AD to around 500 AD
6) Gupta Empire - Most of Punjab between 400 to 500 AD (Approximately)
7) White Huns - 500 AD to 557 AD
8) Hindu Shahis/Kabul Shahis - 557 AD to 915 AD
9) Pala Empire (which included North Punjab between 810 to 850 AD)
10) Multan from 712 AD was part of Arab/Muslim kingdom of Sindh
