That is a lot of stuff! MA kudos to you for making it. I just did an iftar for hub's single friends and all i made was
pakoray
chana chaat
dahi baray
fresh fruit platter
rooh afzah doodh and
biryani plus salad
and i was exhausted. I have a 2.5 year old and expecting another one iA.
Anyhow no offence to you or others, but i find it wierd when people do potluck iftar. Atleast you only had a couple ppl bringing items (which you then cancelled) but i was recently at an iftar where all the guest brought ALL the appetizers or iftari stuff and the host provided drinks as well as 2 salans for dinner (chicken karahi and aloo anday). The dinner part was perfect but to be honest after eating all the good stuff for iftar who wants to eat much for dinner anyways?
^^I have seen people doing potlucks for iftaar or Eid days because more than one person wants to host the event or have an iftaar at their place but since Ramadan only has limited weekends so it kinda gets hard to have that many iftaars,and when they have a common social circle it is all the same people invited.So maybe they do a potluck so everyone can contribute and have a share in doing something for iftaar.
But I agree,people are usually more interested in Iftaar items than in dinner...!

As Chips mentioned & thanks for the wishes, it did go well Alhumdulillah. I guess it depends on what your intention is when doing a potluck Iftar. If its just your close friends & you have a mutual understanding where hey we are gathering up. Lets do it all together its fun. But then I know someone who did her son's "roza kushai", so many people besides family were invited & she did a potluck affair. Lterally only got the dates. Now THAT's rude in my views.
Same lady did 9th birthday for one of her child & again bought the cake & everyone else bought food & even the plates & utensils. That's just being cheap.
tigerlily it went great Alhumdulillah. Went better than my expectations actually & Alhumdulillah I wasn't all that tired & achy the next day ;) The only thing was I got so thirsty in the last 2 hours of my fast.
Cabbage yogurt salad is easy.
Just mix some shredded cabbage in yogurt & then add black pepper powder, a little bit of sugar & a pinch of salt. Its all "andaazay say" In the end it should have a little sweet taste to it.
In our community one lady did a potluck iftar and some others did the whole party by themselves. Last year it was the same for eid. Its fine either ways. However, the conect of a potluck and celeberating a personal occasion is just weird like the birthday parties etc you mentioned. People are also expected to bring a present so that's too much.
