Pakistani cotton scientist declared the world

**A Pakistan-based scientist has been honoured by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the body said in a statement released this week.
**
Dr Yusuf Zafar, who is the director general agriculture and biotechnology at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission was declared ‘Scientist of the Year-2012’ for his pioneering work in the cotton biotechnology sector.

Zafar has over 110 scientific papers (published in national and international journals) to his name.
](http://icac.org/technical-information/researcher-of-the-year/2012_yusuf_zafar)According to ICAC, “in cotton virology his group covers nearly 90 per cent of the global published literature.”

The Faisalabad-based scientist played a key role in bringing together the world’s major cotton groups, including Australia, China, UK and USA, for the purpose of conducting joint research.

Heading the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in Faisalabad, Zafar and his team have contributed helped produce nearly 100 M. Phil and 30 Ph. D Pakistan-based students, focussing on various aspects of research and development in cotton. He has, meanwhile, remained in the front line to establish Biosafety Protocols, Plant Breeder Rights, Intellectual Property Rights/Patents and ISO certification in Pakistan.

In 2001, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission awarded him Best Scientist of the Year Award. The President of Pakistan awarded him ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Distinction) in 2004, the highest recognition for a researcher.

In other honours, Zafar has also won the Rockefeller Foundation and UNESCO Research Awards on Agri-Biotechnology, and is member of the USDA Cochran Fellow on Agriculture Biotechnology.

Apart from leading the Faisalabad institute, he is on the Board of Governors of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology-ICGEB (Italy), FAO country focal person on agriculture biotechnology and member of the Cotton Policy Committee of the government.

The ‘Scientist of the year -2012’ award was announced by ICAC late Wednesday. ICAC is an intergovernmental body with 54 members and provides services to Common Funds for Commodity (CFC), an organisation of UNCTAD-UN family.

Applications for the award are invited each year by the Washington DC-based institute and the selection committee comprises five anonymous judges outside the ICAC Secretariat.

Re: ~ POSITIVE PAKISTANIS ~

Chinoy

The screen at the South End Club Cricket Stadium auditorium on Friday came to life with that famous clip of the smiling Chinoy dedicating her Oscar to the people working to bring about a positive change in Pakistan. That was Chinoy’s inspiration behind her new venture, a series of six documentaries on Pakistanis giving the nation “many reasons to believe in Pakistan, despite all the negativity that presently exists in our society”.

The first documentary in the series Ho Yaqeen highlights the work of a courageous teacher, Sabina Khatri, who runs a school in the violence-hit Lyari.

“The moment I enter Lyari, there is that sign that reads ‘Welcome to Lyari’. It immediately ends my fears,” says the lady in the documentary. Hence the roller coaster atmosphere in that part of the city has no effect on her as she goes about her regular work at the Kiran School, which she has founded to help the children of the area.

So far she has managed to bring about a change in the lives of 90 little ones, some of whom after starting out at her school have also been admitted to bigger schools meant for the rich. Sabina says that her work is not finished after taking care of the teaching bit.

Admitting the brightest children in Lyari to her school, she also holds regular classes for their parents. The mothers are taught how to help and guide their children at home with their lessons, while the fathers are also called to make them realise their responsibility to their children.

“The mother knows what’s good for her child, but it is the father who after being made aware of any problem will take the step to remove that hurdle. He is after all the decision-maker,” says the educationist.

Then when a child is admitted to a bigger school, she is not through with him or her, following up on them, getting their progress reports, etc, and discussing what is going on with the child with the parents.

The selfless teacher called on the stage by Chinoy after the screening of the documentary was touched by the standing ovation she received from the audience.

**“In Pakistan, you turn a stone and you may find a diamond. But howmany here care to turn the stones? Just teaching is not enough, you have to open your heart and bring your students into it,” she said.

**She was glad that her school had now inspired a team of young people to start another such school in Lyari called the Orange School.

“Pakistan needs heroes and their stories are to be told again and again for they are going on and on, day after day without any expectation or rewards. We cannot deny the negatives in our society, but the positives have to be highlighted, too, in order to inspire others here,” said Chinoy as she thanked her SOC Films team for the hard work they put into the project.

Replying to a question as to how she found the subjects for her new series, Chinoy told Dawn that she had people looking for such inspirational souls from Karachi to Kashmir.

“Four of them have been found and finalised as subjects for the documentaries and we have almost made up our mind about the remaining two as well,” she informed.

The occasion also included the launching of 101 Reasons to Believe in a Better Pakistan, a coffee-table book about other inspirational people working to bring about a positive change in their communities.

**Pakistani Talent – The Real Assets of Pakistan – by Asma Sayani
**
Many bright Pakistanis have flared up the country’s name internationally and earned prestige and fame through their talent, for instance Ali Moeen Nawazish secured 22 As in A-levels exams, Arfa Karim earned the title of the youngest Microsoft Certified Expert, Moosa Feroz won the World Mathematics Championship, Naseem Hameed won gold medal a the 100-metre event of the 11th South Asian Federation Games, Irtiza Haider became the world’s youngest Cisco Certified Network Associate, Ibrahim Shahid secured 23 A’s in O-level exams, Umema Adil became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Asp.Net, and the list continues.

Recently, the name of Dr Naeem Taj, a surgeon has been registered in the Guinness Book of World Record for removing a 25.5 cm long gallbladder through a 1 cm incision. This is the longest gallbladder ever removed macroscopically in medical history. Another example of flourishing intellect in Pakistan is Sunbal Syed, an O-level student of St. Patrick’s Girls High School who accomplished first position in English literature in the world and heightened the name of Pakistan.

It is because of these geniuses that Pakistan ranked fourth amongst the most intelligent people survey across the global by the Institute of European Business Administration. They have proved that although Pakistan is a developing nation, it does not lag behind in mental aptitude and skills and its people are equal to the people of developed countries by standards of intelligence and talent.
Pakistanis are blessed with strong brainpower and by coupling that with hard work they demonstrate to the world how intelligence and success don’t always come through abundant resources. With bright minds like these, we have sufficient reason to believe that despite the negative occurrences, this country will never fall apart. It shall survive as long as individuals like these continue to give Pakistan a reason to hold it’s head high and work for it’s betterment.

**Zindagi Trust
**
“Zindagi Trust is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of education available to the average Pakistani. Our areas of work include reforming public schools, educating working children and lobbying the government to improve education policy.”

**Policy achievements:
****School Consolidation Policy
**When Zindagi Trust took over the management of the SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School campus, there were eight schools functional within a single campus: five primary schools (class one to five) and three secondary schools (class six to 10) in the same school premises, each with its own set of teachers and administrators who could not be shared. This phenomenon is not uncommon in Karachi where there are 3,625 government schools but only 900 campuses. Zindagi Trust merged the eight schools into one at SMB School and, more significantly, also lobbied successfully for policy reform to prevent this administrative nightmare from continuing other schools: in July 2011, the Sindh Education Secretary issued a notification approving the School Consolidation Policy that aims to merge adjoining and nearby schools in one campus under one administration.

**Private (ab)use of school grounds
**Another curious practice inherited by the school was the renting out of the school grounds to private parties for wedding dinners at night. The grounds were never cleaned up to be ready for the children the next day, with leftovers from the dinner attracting the neighbourhood’s wild dogs instead! This not only rendered the grounds unusable by the students, depriving them of their right to play sports and run around and express themselves, but also presented a serious hazard. After taking over the school, Zindagi Trust had the grounds cleaned out and put an end to any such activities on the school premises, and successfully pushed the government to implement the same in schools across the city.

They have now successfully tranformed FATIMA JINNAH SCHOOL! Moreover, they also have “PAID TO LEARN” project which is all about giving free education to kids in slums.

"The "I Am Paid to Learn" programme educates children who work in the urban slums of Pakistan. With nearly 2800 students in schools across Pakistan, a 2.2-year accelerated primary education course is taught to the children who spend most of their days toiling in car-repair shops & other general stores in Karachi, Lahore & Rawalpindi. The programme also sponsors the continuing education of top graduates who are encouraged to enroll in mainstream secondary schools. "

**Sukkur: Arming an independent Pakistan with independent citizens is what students Syeda Soohan Rani, Sandeep Kumar and Atizaz Ahsan do.
**
Attending IBA Sukkur on scholarship, the trio knows the benefit of having an education; it’s the difference between finding a spring and begging for a cup of water.

So when a community of flood victims settled outside their campus, they understood that a bit of their time could change the destiny of this nation. “Progress will come once society stops being a burden on itself” says Soohan Rani.

The trio independently set up a tent school in the flood victim’s settlement and teaches the children more than the ABC’s and 123’s that were unheard of in their community; it encourages children to rely on themselves and bring the change they want to see in their lives.

In only a month and a half, begging children transformed in to rays of hope. As a 10-year-old student said “I am going to be a judge when I grow up, so I can serve what is just and make sure that homeless people like me all over Pakistan have homes to live in.”

Re: ~ POSITIVE PAKISTANIS ~

^ I saw his school on TV. What a remarkable job he is doing, duly assisted by some students who spare time and take up teaching assignments. People like him deserve Sitara-e-Imtiaz. Not Meera or Rahman Malik.

Re: ~ POSITIVE PAKISTANIS ~

Very true ....btw...i didnt know meera got an award aswelll ....that too national award
Seems like there is no criteria/standard for such awards anymore

thanks for making this thread sticky..just when i was about to make it sticky...u did it :)

Re: ~ POSITIVE PAKISTANIS ~

Actually Meera was awarded Pride of Performace. Sitara-e-Imtiaz went mostly to PPP bigwigs.

our real heroes are master ayub, ruba humayun, sabina khatri and all the normal middle class and in some cases lower middle class people doing something for people who are below the poverty line.

exactly, these are our true representatives of our country, who have made a difference in the society, doing it for the sake of humanity, for their country and not wanting anything in return. unlike our politicians who do everything for themselves.
