ISLAMABAD, June 17: Political sparring in the parliament is timeless but a PPP MNA chose a real watch to pour scorn on the national budget presented by the newly-elected government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.**
“What else one can expect from a party whose leaders are fond of wearing such expensive personal items,” MNA Shazia Marri said in the National Assembly on Monday, ridiculing the budget and alluding to a $4.6 million watch worn by an unnamed PML-N leader.
She said the budget was not pro-people and had been prepared for the rich.
Her disclosure of the expensive wristwatch astonished everyone in the house, including the Speaker.
In her budget speech, she also compared PPP’s what she claimed pro-poor budgets over the last five years to that of the PML-N government.
Deploring the federal budget, Ms Marri said it seemed to have been prepared only to cater to the needs of the rich industrialists of the country.
In a state of disbelief, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq interjected, seeking a clarification from Ms Marri if she had mentioned the price of the watch in rupees or American dollars. In response, Ms Marri said she had done research on the price tag of the watch which cost 4.6 million dollars. “Then the owner of the watch must have got it adequately insured,” commented the speaker.
It was not only the speaker, Ms Marri’s colleagues sitting across the aisle and mediapersons in the press gallery also got surprised with the claim.
A colleague sitting in the press gallery immediately calculated the price in Pakistan rupees and put the figure at Rs455 million. If it’s true, it makes a huge story, said a senior journalist.
“This is unbelievable. How come one can wear such a costly watch,” said a PML-N MNA when he asked about the claim made by Ms Marri.—Khawar Ghumman

If Sharif was the asstute politician he claims, he would realize how much damage such incidents can do to his parties standing, and how justice in this case would raise their standing in the eyes of the common man.

PML-N MPA Nighat Sheikh suspended over fight with bus hostess
LAHORE: The party membership of PML-N MPA, Nighat Sheikh was suspended on Wednesday.
Sheikh’s membership was suspended over a fight with the hostess of a bus for not serving water swiftly. The PML-N MPA also lodged a case against the hostess.
The PML-N took notice of the incident when it was highlighted on the media and the party’s General Secretary Raja Ashfaq summoned a reply from Night Sheikh within three days.
Hostes should take legal action against ghundi MPA.

Action against ‘violent’ MPA a message to others
LAHORE, June 19: By suspending the party membership of its MPA Nighat Sheikh and initiating a probe into her conduct, the PML-N leadership has given a strong message to its cadre that enjoying two-thirds majority does not mean they are above the law.
A police inquiry has found Ms Sheikh guilty of slapping a bus hostess during her travel from Murree to Lahore on Sunday last.
Punjab PML-N Secretary-General Raja Ashfaq Sarwar says the MPA has been issued a show-cause notice giving her three days to explain her position in writing regarding the incident.
Ms Sheikh may face expulsion from the party, besides losing her assembly membership, if her reply is found unsatisfactory, he says.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken a serious notice of the slapping incident and sought an inquiry report from the police, pledging to do justice. The police report declared the victim, Iqra Nawaz, innocent and held Ms Sheikh guilty of subjecting the bus hostess to torture.
The report says the MPA’s claim that she had been denied water by the bus hostess was not confirmed by any passenger of the bus. In stead, all of them accused Ms Sheikh of torturing and humiliating Ms Nawaz.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah says another enquiry has been initiated against Ms Sheikh for allegedly misbehaving with the bus hostess. He says the police will soon submit challan against the MPA in a court of law for adjudication.
I stll would like to see that bus hostess draging this ghundi to courts and punished…that’ll be the real lesson to other party members.
