As far as I know, talking to non-mehrams is not limited to haram stuff only. It includes all kind of talk that is not really necessary. i.e. the boy and the girl talking for rishta purpose with a wali. Obviously people start with normal stuff first and then it leads to haram talk. Just my 2 paisay
