PhD

exactly what I said in my very first reply in this post. It's difficult to find such programs but not impossible, and most likely, there wouldn't be funding to support the student since they're part-time.

yes, but the domain in most cases is pretty broad... in most cases, the student is able to align him/herself with a supervisor within a specific area of research within the subject domain... but even this doesn't mean that the actual research problem and style of research will appeal to the student. You'll need to reach a compromise... that's the only way to ensure sustained scholarship funding for the duration of your studies.

hmm n if u ver funded by som other ORG thnnnnnn ...????

Re: PhD

^ sponsorship funding? or support funding?... in sponsorship funding, it's possible to determine your own research area - based on the sponsoring organization's needs... but in support funding, the area usually needs to be highly aligned with your supervisor's.

Sponsorship funding is pretty hard to come by though - I've only ever seen 1 student completing his studies based on sponsorship funding. Most have support funding through external grant orgs or through internal financial support from their supervisors or schools.

Re: PhD

sponsorship kinda thing ...hmmmmm yp i can understand ...:)

Very good to see a "parha likha" topic being discussed. Muniya, Lucid is a very knowledgeable and helpful person and inshallah his expert advice will help you immensely. Just last semester, I was serving in a hiring committee for full-time accounting faculty, and you'd be surprised to know how adamant the accounting department was to hire a CPA versus Phd. So not to discourage you from Phd, but Master's, a little part-time teaching experience, and a CPA may actually take you a long way if you wish to teach accounting, specially in a College setting (as opposed to university, where Phd may be a requirement).

On another note, please don't waste your time on schools such as Capella, Walden, Phoenix etc. Since your major (accounting) is under the big umbrella of business majors, you DEFINITELY want an AACSB accredited school.

Re: PhD

^ ditto again to what Jayzee said... and it's not just colleges - even many Universities that I know will hire CPAs with a graduate degree.

Re: PhD

^ They do hire but either the CPAs are veterans who got tired of the profession or if they are recent grads, they don't go far in career without a PhD.

I agree that you can get a teaching position without a PhD but you'd suffer in the long run.

Re: PhD

Phd- Pretty Hot doctor :D
Dr. Muniya--im so proud of yoU!!!! woohoo!

Re: PhD

Go for it Muniya! one of my aunts' daughters is in Qatar and she's doing hers from Walden.. and shes loving it.

Having obtained my PhD-degree only recently, I can tell you that you should persue it only if you really like doing research and specializing on one (tiny) subject matter.

What you certainly should NOT do, is persue it because other alternatives (e.g. working in a company; teaching; or something else) are less attractive or difficult to manage due to your family commitments.

So basically, going for a PhD should be your first primary choice, and not a choice because other options are less desirable.

my sentiments exactly - and that's what I said before... my own criteria is to ask whether someone has done any empirical research and/or research writing before - and whether they're able to work independently as opposed to with defined deliverables and deadlines. Also, I've seen way too many ppl drop out early in the program because of wrong expectations or lack of the right type of comittment, and this comes from the fact that many think of a Ph.D. as just another step in education.

Congratulations NeSCio - I'm hoping to be done in the next six months as well inshaAllah. It's been a very long journey.

Re: PhD

^thnx! I'm already starting to miss that period/time of being a PhD student :o

Not so fast. But thanks.

Yeh my manager just started in walden; so far she loves it.
And her mentor is really good so far; he even helped her with the application process and choosing the area of study. You know whats a little strange though; we're all in the accounting field professionally and I always thought that I'd be doing something thats a combo of the social sciences and accounting. Definately something accounting but my manager is doing something related to social behavior.

I was reading her entrance letters and stuff and you know what I found - I think my writing needs to improve a million times. So the first step is to take some good writing classes.

Thanks for the advise everyone.
I'm sure I'll continue to bother you all with more inquiries.
