Re: PhD degree and the Job market
Yes… like I said, in North America there is usually one to two years of coursework required followed by six months of preparation and writing comprehensive examinations. Thesis work usually commences after this and takes two to three years. So overall, 5 years is quite normal.
I did my PhD in Information Systems with a minor in Management Science.
KKF bhai, when you say “the norm”… is this for a specific discipline?
Here’s a quote from a report by Statistics Canada: “The average age at graduation for doctoral students was 36 years and the average time for completion of a doctoral degree was 5 years, 9 months.” (Link: Doctorate Education in Canada: Findings from the Survey of Earned Doctorates, 2005/2006)
You should consider yourself lucky to have completed in 3.5 years. It is certainly possible with full-time studies, lot of dedication, and support of supervisors, but generally anything less than 4 years is very rare, and most of my colleagues spent 5 years minimum.

.
Here you do all in 3 years, you have no exams just prepare yearly project/report and submit it by the end of each year. Well done to you, you made it. One of my friend is doing in Artificial intelligence ,she said , it is pretty hard.

yeah like I said, European countries have a different model for doctorate education and you start as a PhD candidate and get started with your thesis proposal right away. You pretty much become an ABD (All But Dissertation) within 1.5 years of starting your PhD
On the other hand, in North America, you're a PhD student for the first two years while you do coursework and comprehensive exams, then you become a PhD candidate until you defend your PhD thesis proposal and finally an ABD while you're working on writing up your dissertation... and people can spend years being an ABD... that's why many refer to it here as "All But Done".
Definitely much simpler to go directly into thesis without requiring coursework or exams... that's why I recommend to most people that if they can, they should try to pursue their doctorates in a European country.
Re: PhD degree and the Job market
yup, iA, if everything goes well in the new year :)
In that case Australia is better.
Re: PhD degree and the Job market
I found something really strange .. Two people in pakistan doing their PhD and in the dissertation they were literally buying ready made notes instead of doing their own researches etc ... and some of their assignments were done not by them but other people helping them out ...
That sort of makes me really feel that PhD in Pakistan is just like someone completing college ! I might be wrong but I really felt that these guys are cheating the system .. PhD has a very strong presence and value in the educational system and its only being ripped apart with these tactics ..
What is the international acceptance of those who do their PhD from Pakistan?
Which university was that?

i've worked in NZ for a year and i'm going back there in January for another year's contract, iA. at the end of my contract, i expect a faculty position at Dunedin University, iA. this would come about almost 8 years of waiting and that too in a far away land called 'downunder' ... :( thanx to Allah that i've successfully achieved my target...der aayad durust aayad! [a lil late is better than never!]

I am not sure since I didnt ask Ali .. But almost the same trend was seen amongst several individuals doing the "PhD" ... one of them literally asked me to write a project for them after they give me bullet points of what they want written !

Best of luck, Newzealand is a good country over all, you can always move to Australia later. Salaries in Australia are higher than NZ.

thank you bro...i chose NZ because i LOVE it's weather and landscape which is quite similar to Canada...i hate the heat in Australia...i may return to Canada after gaining a few year's of teaching experience there. my bossan said she will try to get me back here in Canada where my family is. i would prefer that, iA. :)

I know, I went to one of the school and it is not like they got any favor/material but PhD. student work closely with appointed faculty and sometime final year students collaborate in research work with PhD. student.

Pakistan has good and bad universities. I am sure the trend you are talking about is specific to SOME private universities. Generally the well-established universities of Pakistan are not that bad. Even I know of universities in the UK where it is not that difficult to do a PhD.
Asking others to do your 'assignments' sounds childish. PhD is 'research' and as in school, college etc your work is judged universally by your grades/gpa etc, the metric to judge research is 'publications'. Quantity and quality of it. So if you have a PhD degree from Pakistan and you have publications in reputed journals, no one will ignore you anywhere in the world.

I was going to say the same. It is a lot of work, more like you spend your whole life in education.
And, how about masters? Do they have for more than 2 or 3 years ?

A Master's degree can be completed in a year if it's coursework & project based, or two years if it's coursework & thesis based.
Some students may take longer depending on the nature of their research but more than 3 years is rare.
Re: PhD degree and the Job market
Ph.D. should not be pursued with job market as the main driver. You need to have passion for the field. Else it is waste of your time and of resources that can be allocated to a more passionate candidate.

Here it depends on the course , some courses have for 1 year and some for 2. Most taught masters courses are one year in length if completed full time and two if you study a part time course.
Re: PhD degree and the Job market
Good replies here.
PhD is basically for people who have a passion, for increasing their knowledge on a subject.
This is called "research".
New cures are found for cancer, new understandings are found how volcanoes erupt, new understandings on why weather changes, or how tornadoes are created, or if there are new stars, in the universe. Reseach is also done on how better engies can be made, better, planes, submarines, GPS system, TVs, mobile phones, new methods of growing food, dams, electricity etc etc.
To say that Phd studies is for going for teaching position is an "understatement".
The reality is the more Phd students you have, it will determine the level of new innovations and progress of the country.
All major companies in the world, with cutting edge technology hire Phd people, to remain ahead of the opposition.
