Mamaof3, perhaps you could try it in a subtle way. Would it help to send them an email yourself, thank them for their joke but say something like 'I usually don't read jokes that much, but it's very kind of you to send them, I would like to know however how you are all doing, etc. etc.' And then tell them something about you and your family and see how they respond.
