PESHAWAR: Site for new airport selected

PESHAWAR, Nov 19: The Civil Aviation Authority has selected site for the construction of a new international airport on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

Senior officials said that the CAA’s operational committee and selection board after much ado approved the new site identified near Baddaber, some 16 kilometres southeast of Peshawar.

So lets see. Pakistan has had a new airport in Karachi, Lahore in the last couple of years. New airports coming up: Sialkot, Peshawar, Gawadar, and Islamabad (its been in the news since long now) Looks like the govt. is really going after the infrastructure. In fact I read a statement of Shaukat Aziz somedays ago where he said that first generation reforms in pakistan are now successfully over and that in the second generation of reforms you can expect to see an improvement in the infrastructure. :jhanda:

Alhamdulilah! :jhanda:

What a waste of money. I swear we will never think economically and for the benefit of the common man.

Infrastructure is:

  1. Education
  2. Health
  3. Clean water
  4. Roads (so that transportation of goods is cheaper and more cost-effective)
  5. Public Transport for the common man.

Airports arent infrastructure. They are tools of the elite to travel etc. Oh yeah plus they are big enough to skim some money off the top.

CM bud, in this case I am gonna have to disagree with you, only three airports in Pakistan turn over an operating profit. Peshawar, Islamabad, and Karachi. Pesh's airport is now in the middle of a civilian area. Unless they shift it, it's a disaster waiting to happen. Although I agree the government shouldn't involve itself in these kind of projects they would be much better in private sector hands.

You may want to twist the definition of infrastructure to support your argument but that doesn't change the fact that airports are still a mode of transportation and thus part of an infrastructure. Not to mention that the construction and running of this airport will result in employment for several hundred (or thousand) people.

As regards Education, and health. The govt. has launched National Commission for Human Development to tackle the issue. Its being run by non-govt. people, so I am very optimistic that we'll see improvement in that regard.

As for roads, I belive Pakistan road network is already much better than India. But it can still be improved. There was a thread here sometime back about major work being carried out in this sector.

t I hear there has been steady improvement in the public transport in Lahore and there was talk of expanding this to other cities. I have been hearing rumors of the govt. plans to introduce Metro buses in Islamabad for sometime now. Wagons are being phased out of Lahore and being replaced by Metro buses. I havent seen those but maybe someone from Lahore can tell us more abt them.

Great news, btw Zakk, where exactly is this place? Whats it called? Is it near Ziarat-Kaka-Khan?

CM,

true you mentioned areas to be invested in.
but in this case, we shouldnt stop building infrastructure, without these who will come and invest in Pakistan? these are not all elite things, many people get jobs on airport, plus it can create landing for other airlines and are profitable for the country.
