Re: Pedophile Molvi of Pakistan
The problem with social media is that things get blown out of proportion with mirch-masala all the time. A plain lie is easy to contradict but half-truths are hard to challenge. The statement you are referring to is a half-truth so bear with me. Yes, there are such cases of individuals over-stepping authority. But such cases exist in every society. Every now and then we hear some doctor doing something inappropriate to a female patient in US but that is still a rarity given the number of patient-doctor interactions occurring daily. Similarly, it should be kept in mind that millions of women go out to study/work/etc. daily in every large city in Pakistan and return home without incident.
I attended school, college and university in Pakistan. During all those years, I always had one or more female relatives attending the same institution with me as well. I witnessed harassment firsthand targeted at my female relatives but that doesn’t mean it was part of life there or an everyday occurrence. Most of the harassment came from fellow male students. A male professor once asked my female relative if she would like to meet him off campus which she declined and complained to senior faculty who took disciplinary action against that professor.
It should also be kept in mind that these incidents cannot be viewed in isolation. They are linked to the general law and order situation. For example, when there was hurricane Katrina in New Orleans about a decade ago, lots of women got raped.
