He's got coffee (something hot) and coke (something cold) MIXED in the thermos, thinking it will automatically keep the coffee warm and the coke cold. What the shopkeeper meant was that if you put ONE THING cold in it, it'll keep it cool and if you put ONE THING hot in it, it'll keep it warm.
