I m not pathan.. but i do have very very nice and close pathan friend.... and i do listen to alot of pashtu.. but its a very hard lang to learn... so i still have trouble learnin even a word!

being Pathan means you are from the bloodline of one of the huge pushtoon tribes.
If your parents/ guardians didnt teach you Pushtu/Pukhtu it doesnt change your genetic heritage.
Anyway lots of young Pashtoon kids abroad choose not to speak/learn pushtu but they are 100% Pustoon.

You just answered your own questions there. Anyone can claim to be a ‘pathan’ (most of them seem to post on this site) but a true pashtun will always know their language and more.

^^^ dont listen to her, brick chick was found on a beach in the uk amongst the washed up seaweed and carbuncles and flotsam and jetsum the sea washes in... She was an egg at the time and the sea possibly washed her in from africa.
Anyway a very nic pathan lady and man took her home, hatched her out and taught her their customs.
she calls her self a pathan
but the ebony black skin and huge afro hair say different.

^^ Exactly......And conversely if somebody speaks fluent pukho w/o any accent, but is not a pathan, would he be considered Pukhtoon....
Also, I will tell my friend Jahengir Khan...that his own ethnic brethren have disowned him, because he does not speak pukhto.....What a pity.....some of the logic pukhtoons come up with only a pukhtoon would be able to follow....
e.g. I played squash semi professionally, was a employed by PIA under their Colts program (the same program Jehangir Khan came out of) and spent a lot of time around pukhtoons, because Squash prior to the advent of nineties was played predominantely by pukhtoons at the professional level.
At any rate, all of us (squash players) used to have plenty of discussion on various topic.....But one argument that was put out by the Pukhtoon players took the cake....that,"in order to become world champion, you have to be first of all Muslim, and secondly you should be pathan"....that was and still remains hilarious to say the least.....and this is a similar logic some of pukhtoons are putting out here by saying that you have to speak pukhto to be a true pathan....I'd say you have to speak arabic to be a true muslim.....

I hope you told those squash players that they were talking load of nonsense. Religion and race is not an indicator of specialisation at a particular sport, there are instances where it may help but realistically speaking how can being a Muslim and a pathan enable you to become incredibly good at hitting a ball against a wall!
you can tell your friend Mr Jehangir Khan, that he aught to set up a non pushtu speaking pathan fellowship… I know of quite few pathans who would qualify,
quite a few of whom live in Karachi…

Not always Golden. What if someone says umbaraksha to you.....do you not say 'khudai de ubagha' then too?
Or have I just been saying it wrong all these years?
