Fair enough, but it’s not only one way, i am sure there is Hindkowan of Pashtun decent. I don’t think it’s going to have a positive impact on Afghan/Pashtun Tribal Confederation, the Pashtunizing of other minorities in our regions, it could impurify our ancient Tribal Blood.

You have a point but they don’t usually change their tribe name which makes it easy to discern them from other Pashtuns. Change in racial makeup of nations is inevitable anyway though, just like Swatis, Mushwanis and countless other tribes have assimilated into Pashtun society but are not originally Pashtun. Or if we go by the patrilineal lineage rule even the Ghilzai (Khilji) tribe would originally be Turkish (:D).

In my opinion it’s the language, customs and descent combined together which define an ethnic group. Of course the Pashto speakers of non-Pashtun descent will say it’s only the language which matters, Hindkowan who follow Pashtunwali (e.g. Tanoli tribe) will say it’s only the customs which matter whilst Afrdi’s and Yusufzai’s from northern India and some of my people from Attock will tell you if ones father was a Pashtun they’re a Pashtun and everything else is irrelevant but I think it’s all three language, customs and paternal descent which make up an ethnic group.

You seem to know lots about Pashtuns/Afghans, are you Afghan/Pashtun?

No I’m about as Afghan/Pashtun as a husky is a wolf. I’m Hindkowan of Afghan/Pashtun descent.

I’ve played Buz-Kashi in Pak though, does that count? Been horse riding from a young age here in England but didn’t do me any favours, I was an embarrassment compared to my uncles.

Yea, I’m from Attock btw. Oh and my parents speak pushto, but they taught my siblings and I hindko instead. I take it you’re from Attock as well?

cool sis, where in attock u from? a lot of Pashtun parents in gorgushti area have been using Hindko more often than their own language becuase it was the dominant language in Attock, now their kids speak better Hindko, in our grandparents generation Gorgushti was majority Pashto speaking but now it’s majority Hindko speaking over there. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few generations everyone starts speaking Persian as that’s the majority language now.

I agreed with the rest of your comments except for the last sentence. It would be stupid to believe in that specific theory about Ghaljai origin. I myself belong to that Tribe, i see no connections with Turks what so ever. If it was to be true, we should now have had at least a few Turkish words in our Pashto. It is not a avlid theory i should, it was found to bring disunity between our various Tribes for the interest of foreign rulers. Afghan scholars have proven that Ghaljian are from the start a pashtun Tribal Confederacy. There is many ways of pronouncing the word Ghiljai, one is Gharzai - literarly it means The Son of Mountain - Ghar = Mountain - Zai = Son. So this again shows no connections with Turks.

I agree with you on this. It’s all the three factors you mentioned that make someone a Pashtun/Afghan.

My parents are from Gorghushti, represent! Ya I was there just a few months ago, and everyone basically spoke hindko. I did come across some Pushto speaking folks, even some of my relatives, but they all preferred hindko instead.

What abt you? Whereabouts in Attock are you from (if not Gorghusthi, that is)?

I m not pathan.. but i do have very very nice and close pathan friend… and i do listen to alot of pashtu.. but its a very hard lang to learn… so i still have trouble learnin even a word!
