Former Palestine Security Chief Major General Musa Arafat was assassinated on Wednesday by an armed group that stormed his residence.

Dozens of armed men took Yaser Arafat’s cousin, Musa Arafat into the street while he was still in pajamas and shot him in the head. Following the clash lasting half an hour in which rockets were also used, Musa Arafat’s son Minhel was abducted. Palestinian security sources later announced that Minhel was also killed. An organization known as the Popular Resistance Committees of the Intifada has claimed responsibility for the killings. The organization which is formed by former members of Al Fatah maintained that Arafat was involved in irregularities and collaborated with Israel and that the government had failed to step in.

The incident which coincided with Israel’s preparations to leave the Gaza Strip to Palestinian authority raised concerns that the region will drift into instability. President Mahmut Abbas holding an emergency meeting with Prime Minister Ahmed Qurey and commanders responsible from security reacted strongly to the incident. Abbas, who cancelled his US trip to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, demanded that the killers be immediately captured and punished.

Abbas decided to remain in Gaza for the Gaza handover, which is to take place in a few days and out of some security concerns following Arafat’s murder. Commenting on the incident, Iraqi Information Minister Nebil Saat told, “It is a very dangerous development. It is inevitable that this murder will affect us in many aspects”.

Former Palestinian leader, the late Yasser Arafat had appointed Musa Arafat as the top security official before his death and following this, protest meetings were held in Palestinian streets, which turned violent. Yaser Arafat had stepped back from his decision upon the protests; however, Musa Arafat continued to be one of the most influential names in Gaza and was acting as adviser to Mahmoud Abbas. Arafat was one of the founders of the al-Fatah organization and one of the senior officials of the al-Fatah Revolutionary Council. Arafat who came to Palestine after the 1993 Oslo Peace Agreement was later the target of many assassination attempts. The previous attack took place in July 2003 when his car was attacked with a hand grenade. Arafat traveled in an armed limousine and was always accompanied by an army of security guards under strict security measures. The Arafat family compound in Gaza is located very close to the Abbas’ compound.

‘Hamas might have killed Arafat’

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar condemned the attack, which he termed as “destructive and unacceptable”. Although the Popular Resistance Committees have claimed responsibility for the attack, some circles are suspicious of Hamas. It is claimed that Hamas had used the same organization in some former incidents. Some organization members involved in the killing Musa had also been arrested on the grounds that they were involved in the attack on the American diplomatic convoy in October 2003, claiming the lives of three Americans.
