KARACHI: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani appointed **a new finance ministry supremo **on Wednesday as a balance of payments crisis brewed in the country.

The Pakistani rupee sank to a record low of 80.30 to the dollar due to unrelenting pressure from import payments and an erosion of confidence in an economy facing multiple problems.

Veteran banker Shaukat Tarin, a former chairman of the Karachi Stock Exchange, will hold the title of adviser to the prime minister, but he has the status of a minister in the six-month-old civilian government.
