models are people with good facial characteristics....once they are selected based on these factors, then the make-up artists, photographers, designers in a combined effort make'em look stunning.
PS.there is one exception though...i met an indian model-actress named sushmita sen in NYC way back in 2001, she looked pretty but more importantly had great charisma too(a gr8 conversationalist)...just thot i'd mention :)
