PAkistan....

… should it be a democratic country or like we know it now?
..
we all know what happen in last fifteen years, keeping that in mind what you people think? my question is for the people living IN the pakistan, as they have that experience of living with so called democracy and undemocratic regims like this, and martial laws..

PS: I find it very interesting that what ever progress Pakistan made was under some unlawfull governments… like Ayob Khan’s and Zia’s. and by development I mean Industrial development and of course defence.

well there goes your definition of "progress".. if you think progress is getting loans you cannot repay to buy more defence equipment and putting the whole country in deep doodoo with jobless rates on the rise, inflation at all time highs and messing up with the culture, brother against brother using intelligence agencies to spark sectarian violence.. then yes.. we made a lot of "progress" under dictators..

Under Zia Pakistan has been a very progressive country. Every Pakistani was rich enough to afford AK47. There was a completer harmony between different religious sects. Shias were praying in the mosques of Sunni's and Sunnins in Shias mosques. In the field of pharmacy we were far ahead than today, expensive medicines like Heroin were available at every corner of every city and at a very cheap price. And our industry had expanded to that extent that we had to import millions of labours from Afghanistan. To make a long story short it was a golden era of Pakistan.

i think here you are talking about a certain era... we shouldn't forget that cold war and of course Afghan war had some influence in all that lawlessness, drugs and violance... talking about the industrial development, well we all know that it was in Ayob Khan's dictatorship when country did something in positive way... I don't recall any new indutry setting up after that, the industrial development we see now in Punjab, is not new in a way, as its simply industrial migration from one part of the country to the other part..... As far as sactarial violance and other political issues are concern... well we faced the worst of it in democratic period.. if you don't agree then go back to 1988 ... voilance in Karachi started with an incident at Suhrab Ghout and from that date it is not stoped! ... violance among differen sects 1st came into news in 1995, when, by the way, was a democratic government.
Joblessness!! my arse, lets talk about it on Provencial level, lets start with Sindh,.... Sindh main problem (Jobwise) is so called Quota system, (by the way, which was introduced in 1971, by a democratic government) you might now aware of it that Sindh's jobs are distributed among rural and urban Sindh on 60% and 40% qouta respectively.. in mid of 90's 1st time after about thirteen years jobs were advertised for the Urban Sindh, on the other hand rural sindh was not so developed so there were no candidates for many jobs!!.. Jobs in private sector... ok... was there any functional private sector there? NO... Pakistan's largest Industrial estate NoriAbad was announced in 1984, In Junaijo's period, that was about five thousands industrial units, with tax releifs and other benefits.. why it wasn't succesfull?? any idea?? I bet not...... the large area of that industrial estate is under a perticular leader's (who is also have some political attachment with a very Popular Political PArty) land.. or rather say control... kidnaping for ransome was a daily routine in that area... reslut... indutries started to move to Faisalabad... Indutrial estates in KArachi ... they were paying tax to an other Political Party... Hyderabad ... Sindh's 2nd Largest city ... was also a bettle ground for two parties... rest of the Sindh.. better not talk about it..
NWFP..... there is nothing much to there to talk about as they provide work force to Punjab and Sindh..
BAluchistan... still devided into different clans.. they get royality fom the Suee Project... but every second or third month we hear about Clashes betweet Bugtee's and Mazari's, who also happen to be over political leaders..
Punjab...gained nothing much in early years, as the Capital and the economical centre was Karachi, and most of the investment was on that side.. and they relied on agriculture mostly.. but things started to change and from mid 80's investers started investing in Punjab.. which was a good news... new industrial empires were built in that era... leaving famouse 22 families far behind... of course creating new jobs and opportunities...
As far as PAkistan's Economy is concern.. I don't know much about economics as I am engineering person, but I know one thing that in Zia's Dictatorship $ was fluctuating between Rs23 to Rs28 ... which is now Rs 56 i guess..
No doubt we did made some progress In our democratic governments... we lost half of country in a democratic process!!... thanks to democracy.... now our leaders, in parliment, talk about taking other ways to gain their rights .. (refer to Sindh Assembly in 1996, when member of a renouced political party, threatened to change PAkistan's geography!!).. which was heard before but only on streets..
As far as huge pile of loans is concern, name single developing coutry not taking any loans!!... but do you see any progress in the country?? no...In 1989 pakistan's total loans were about 9 Billion dollers.. which now over 35 Billion dollers ... thanks to democratic ten years!!
