Re: Pakistan wins hockey gold at Asian Games, beat Malaysia 2-0 in the final
Fine win but grey areas exist: Ex-Olympians
KARACHI: Pakistan’s 2-0 win against Malaysia at the XVI Asian Games
hockey final in Guangzhou, China, on Thursday has prompted several legendary
Olympians to step forward and congratulate the green shirts and even the
Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), of which they have remained most critical for
the past many months.
**Speaking to Dawn on Thursday, Pakistan’s best forwards of their time Shahnaz **
**Sheikh, Islahuddin Siddiqui, Hasan Sardar and Shahbaz Ahmad Sr, though united in **
**their joy over the Asiad gold, also hoped that the federation would carry on **
with the good work that earned them the result.
**“I’m very happy for the team and our nation and the PHF, too, as it also **
figures somewhere in there,” said Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh.
**“The Asiad final was basically a fight between two lions of which Pakistan **
**was the wounded lion, who hadn’t won the event for 20 years and its pride was **
**hurt due to this fact. Malaysia was the hungry lion, who hadn’t won it ever but **
really wanted to. Finally, the wounded lion won the fight,” he said.
“For the Pakistan team it is also great that they won’t have to feature in
any qualifiers in order to participate in the London Olympics as the win gives
them a direct berth at the 2012 Games,” he pointed out.
**“I now request the prime minister of Pakistan to kindly revive the two per **
**cent sports quota and provide the players with good jobs, too,” he **
concluded.
Also sending out his good wishes to Asia’s new hockey champions was
Pakistan’s most successful captain Islahuddin Siddiqui who said that the team
deserved all the credit, just the way they deserved all the criticism coming
their way earlier.
**“There is love and respect after winning and criticism after defeat. What we **
**had said earlier was nothing personal for we had given mere suggestions, take it **
**or leave it. Counting this one, we have won eight Asian Games gold medals in all **
**and I have myself been a part of four of them — three as a player and the fourth **
as the coach and manager of the 1990 squad that won before this.
**He continued: “So when seniors of our caliber give suggestions, they are to **
**be paid heed and not condemned. We have always worked for the betterment of **
**hockey and it was our criticism that put the current young PHF management on the **
**right track. Hopefully they will carry on with the good work so that we get good **
results in the 2012 Olympics, too.
Joining Islah on his hopes for the future, Pakistan’s best centre-forward to
date Hasan Sardar, too, said that the PHF should carry on with what they are
doing for building a strong national side.
**“It is a timely achievement as we needed this win very badly but while we **
**rejoice we should also not ignore our weaknesses. I remember we used to give **
**short passes and dodges when we used to play many years ago and the team used **
**those very same techniques in the final on today. If we keep on working on this **
**old technique of ours, there are chances of success in the future too. Still, **
**there are several flaws to be covered, too, such as Sohail Abbas’s being unable **
to score against India and South Korea,” he said.
**About the Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel whom he had not approved of **
**earlier, Hasan said: “Well, yes he deserves credit, too. But you also have to **
**understand that his success really depends on his team’s work on the field. They **
didn’t falter so he can take the credit this time.”
Shahbaz Ahmad Sr said that although the win is great, he would still have a
difference of opinion with the PHF on certain issues. “I am entitled to my own
point of view, aren’t I?” he asked.
**“I had said that the Dutch coach was a club coach as I knew his potential. **
**Look, we missed three penalty strokes in the semi-final, the same goes for **
**penalty corners. We couldn’t even take a short corner against South Korea. All **
**these areas need to be worked on and I will keep an eye on the federation’s work **
to point out where they go wrong.

Re: Pakistan wins hockey gold at Asian Games, beat Malaysia 2-0 in the final
Yes we should not be complacent. We lost to India in the tournament. We very poorly finished 6th at CWG even loosing to South Africa.
