Re: Pakistan under threat
sorry haris theres no link given. i hope this does nt mean the thread is closed down. i guess issues as global warming do not get much importance in pakistan - a country which will be hit very hard.
Re: Pakistan under threat
even the rich will be affected by global warming. they can hide from many things of reality in life in pakistan but this is something we cant predict. we wont be fighting over oil anymore but water resources. provinces in pakistan are already playing water war games. at the moment this is minor but sooner or later this will be more serious and the potential for international conflicst over water will increase.
people say build dams - you are right - an excellent idea BUT what if afghanistan and india decided to dam up their rivers that flow into pakistan? a dam is not necessarily the best idea - they have short life spans and the holding up of water at one point obviously means someone or something further downstream has lost their NATURAL right to that water - so naturally anger.
dams are not just something that pakistan can build - i wonder how many of those who support dam building will support neighbouring nations on their right to build dams then??
where will dams be built? dams and barrages have already affected the water sitaution in pakisan badly - sindh is becoming increasingly desertified. in fact deserts are gaining ground everywhere in pakistan - desert management can be quite simple.
i guess afghanistan will be greener because its slightly west of pakistan and the melting of glaciers will help it. butt he latter shoud also help pakistan. if glaciers are melting and dams have been built - how do we know that a problem might not occur?
i personally thought india, pakistan and afghanistan would become drier. i dont understand the logic of pakistan being the only one which will dry up and other go green.
first and foremost we need to take steps against global warming - less pollutants going in the atmosphere, more afforestation and watershed management programmes, combating desertification and use of crops which can grow in desert environments such as hemp, cut wasting water and a controversial one - "birth control".
Re: Pakistan under threat
Dams may be fine for up country places like Punjab or India, but will only accelerate the disaster for Sindh and other coastal areas.
Re: Pakistan under threat
^^ well in other areas they need water conservation plants...

And this conclusion is drawn as a result of what research? The crop grown in punjab are utilized by sindhis as well you know.

Search for my posts about dams, there is enough research combined with historical evidence of Punjab's games to back this up. Bottom line is that Sindhis don't trust Punjabis and rightly so.
Re: Pakistan under threat
thejoke,
You didnāt post the link with the article thatās why I asked you to mention it in the thread later, since a reference as well as link is required by forum rules to be posted when sharing material from any other source. And when a ref/link cant be produced by a poster the thread does risk being closed. But seems you donāt have the link to the source you quoted and used material from.
Iād however excuse for now (because you had mentioned the source and date), and hope everyone will be careful in this regard in future. Thanks.
By the way hereās the link from Dawn Eco & Bus Rev from this Monday;

Re: Pakistan under threat
And, you're right, these global warming/climatic issues are really not given due attention in Pakistan. WHich is very dangerous.
Re: Pakistan under threat
people in power dont understand global warming over there. global warming is going to increase poverty levels for sure. i hope this thread does nt turn into a shall we or shan't we build dams abnd then fight over that and get the thread closed. its amazing how many pakistanis dot understand the seriousness of this issue. i should nt say amazing but understandable in fact.
if glaciers melt the indus could change direction. the indus could flood in certain areas. the dam could be broken.
luckily most people in pakistan do not use alot of resources. but we could take care more for the enviornment.
i am personally really worried about this.
