when exactly was Pakistan not on sale..... Pakistan army( or at least the leadership) and intelligence agencies has been on sale for quite some time. Afghan war, we were at sale,.war against terror, we are at sale. UNO Peace keeping missions, Pakistan has the biggest contingency amongst all the big UN cooperating nations. cause we are on sale.. So its always like that...
now who is going to secure all the land which will be given to Saudi Arabia. God know what US can do in those lands with the help of Saudis... What I know is that Saudi has recently stoppped cultivating in its own land at various points, cause as per them it was effecting the land cause of huge amount of water being drained into land, thus increasing the under ground water level and effecting the oil and gas reserves.
why not Pakistan make model farms by themselves and start exporting the goods??? It will serve the same purpose right.
A number of Middle Eastern countries, being desert, need to look for food sources outside their countries.
Why not use the money we get from leasing Land to Saudis and others to build model farms of our own?!?!
Do you have any statistics how much land has been used by foreign countries to setup car factories? I don't think much land is required for that purpose. More over these factories are operating in cities or suburbs, where cultivation is not done.
As regard sentiment, ask any Indian, Jew or American how much land they are going to give some foreign country for cultivation? This sentiment should have been part of Paki a long time ago when Pakistan was created. Lack of this sentiment has resulted neither we are true Muslims nor we are united and cohisve Paki nation. Go figure.
Water is scarce in Pakistan. Predictions are that condition is going to worsen in 10 to 20 years.
How can we allow foreigners to use such a scarce commodity as water for their crops, when Pakistanis themselves will be losing their agricultural output due to water?
Re: Pakistan to lend 700,000 acres farmland to Arab states
You mean water scarcity is the propaganda issue?
Propaganda against whom and by whom?
http://pakistan.foreignpolicyblogs.com/2009/08/24/water-shortage-in-pakistan/
Quoting from a 2005 World Bank study, the Center for Research & Security Studies has identified the coming crisis of water in Pakistan. This report, which is titled Pakistan Will Cry for Water, describes how Pakistan is changing from ‘water scarce’ country to ‘waster stressed’ country.
The report goes on to describe that lack of a comprehensive water strategy, public’s insensitivity and wastage of water, and out of control population are some of the reasons that clean drinking water, or water in general is on the decline in Pakistan.
Pakistan is running out of water so fast that the shortage will strangulate all water-based economic activity by 2015, a Pakistani thinktank says. And that pretty much covers 70 percent of the population who are involved in farming.
he depletion of water resources is unchecked, as the 2009 UN World Water Development Report points out. It says that the total actual renewable water resources in Pakistan decreased from 2,961 cubic metres per capita in 2000 to 1,420 cubic metres in 2005. A more recent study indicates an available supply of water of little more than 1,000 cubic metres per person.
Re: Pakistan to lend 700,000 acres farmland to Arab states
any company would be out of their mind to invest in pakistan. A basic survey will let them know that pakistan does not have direct control over its rivers....
I mean use your common sense....why would badu's wana invest in a country without doing due diligence.....
I think some folks are just fear-mongering and shouting for no reason .....
i am not part of any propaganda scheme I am a student of environmental issues and I belive that some experimental farming should be done in pakistan....
I mean use your common sense....why would badu's wana invest in a country without doing due diligence.....
Why don't you read hundreds of reports out there saying that Pakistan is going to see acute shortage of water? Do you think ALL of those reports by MULTIPLE sources, including government of Pakistan itself, are mere propaganda?
Come on, use your common sense.
As far as "Arbi buddoos" doing due diligence, well, they probably did do it. And God knows what length they may go to get water in the lands snatched from Pakistani people.
If by "due diligence" you mean they found out that Pakistan will have plenty of water somehow then I ask you to show any such report.
If Pak govt thinks it has extra land available then it should distribute that land among poor Pakistani farmers, instead of giving the land to foreigners.
Re: Pakistan to lend 700,000 acres farmland to Arab states
i think you mis understood me....let me repeat..
the fear mongering is the propoganda, that badu's will eat our country...
pakistan will have a severe shortage every year and this will intensify and no country should invest billions in this unless pakistanis take proper control of their rivers and dam-ization!
we need not fear the propoganda of badu eating our country!
Agreed with the condition that who so ever take this land must gaurentee X number of yield per acre to which government should be part of it. Tha land can not be sold to any one else. If he fails, government should take over and give to some other deserving person.
Rich baddu should seek help from Israel, how they have coverted their deserts in to farm lands and work hard like Jews.
What if the these 700000 acres of land are used to produce crops that are also produced by pakistani farmers?Wouldn't sales of crops grown by pakistani farmers be affected? Will the pakistani govt compensate these farmers?
Will use of water be monitored? In India companies like Coco Cola bought land and not water. And because they can do what they want in the land they own, these companies then started drawing unreasonable amounts of water from the land they bought leaving nearby farm lands with no ground water.
This has a colonial odor to it. What country "loans" farmland to another country? If the Arabs want to buy food from Pakistan why don't they pay for what is grown by Pakistani farmers? 700,000 acres today; how many tomorrow? This is only the first step. Is there any limit to the amount of land the government is willing to "loan" to Arab states?
