Pakistan can outdo Proteas, says Wasim
KARACHI: Former cricket great Wasim Akram said on Friday that if Pakistan play with passion and aggression they can outdo rivals India and beat South Africa on their tough tour.

“I was surprised to see India low on passion and aggression after winning the first Test,” Wasim said. “Pakistan can fare better than India because they have more passion and aggression in their cricket,” he added.

The 40-year-old former all-rounder, who retired in 2003, was in the commentary team in the series which South Africa won 2-1 against India earlier this month.

His comments came at the start of the first Test between Pakistan and South Africa.

Wasim said India relied heavily on star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and skipper Rahul Dravid who failed to shine with the bat.

“I was surprised to see Sachin (Tendulkar) so low on passion and he was negative in his batting. In fact India looked afraid in the last Test and Pakistan should avoid such an approach,” he said.

Wasim, who took 414 Test and a world record of 502 one-day wickets during an illustrious career, said fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar could be the key for Pakistan.

Shoaib, who was not selected in the original squad over fitness problem, has now been sent to join the team in South Africa and should be available for the second Test.

“He can be crucial factor in helping Pakistan win,” Wasim explained.

Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq should have pushed for Shoaib’s inclusion, he added.

“Inzamam had led the team well but I think he should know where his priorities lie and he should have fought for Shoaib because Shoaib is a proven match winner,” Wasim further added.

He also praised Indian paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.

“Sreesanth showed how much aggression you need to be successful in South Africa and proved a successful bowler for India and in the same way Shoaib can be successful,” he expressed.

Wasim lashed out at Pakistan selectors for not naming all-rounder Azhar Mahmood in the initial 30-man squad for the World Cup, which begins in the West Indies in March.

“Azhar could have been handy in the World Cup as he has been doing well for Surrey County in England but I am amazed he was overlooked,” he said.

Shoaib Akhtar (hamstring) and Umar Gul (ankle) are returning home. Shabbir Ahmad and off-spinner Abdur Rehman have been asked to join the team in SA.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news (merged)

^ Interesting. I say Pak go for the kill in the final game, drop either Farhat or Hafeez (depending on the 2nd innings) and have Hameed promoted to opener. I would go for a 5 man attack for the next game. Sami, Asif, Shabbir Kaneria, Rehman would make for a good attack.

Cricket-Pakistan’s Akhtar, Gul to return home KARACHI, Pakistan, Jan 22 (AFP) Pakistan’s injured pace duo Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul will miss the rest of the team’s tour of South Africa to undergo rehabilitation for the World Cup, an official said Monday. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman said no replacements have been sought for next week’s third Test but two to three players would be sent to join the team ahead of the one-day series which starts next month. A scan on Akhtar’s injury revealed he needs two weeks’ rest. All-rounder Shoaib Malik would stay with the team as his ankle injury, which forced him to miss the Tests, is likely to heal before the five-match one-day series, the spokesman added. Chances of Shabbir being cited for Chucking again?

What do you guys think? What are the chances he will be No balled for chucking by Mota Parker or Doctoring Doctrove...
?

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news (merged)

^ It's actually Bucknor and mota Parker in the next game at Cape Town. I have n't seen Shabbir bowl for a while so don't really know what his remodelled action looks like but I'm sure mota Parker will be watching his action like a hawk.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news (merged)

Does Pakistan suffer from bowler shortage? We have plenty of talent just waiting to get a chance, Mo Asif is a living example. Give some new kid the chance to prove himself.

PCB Chairman sets sights on series victory](http://www.app.com.pk/en/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2539&Itemid=2)

Monday, 22 January 2007
ISLAMABAD, Jan 22 (APP): The Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Dr. NasimAshraf, Monday urged the national team to go all out to register their first-ever Test-series victory in South Africa by winning the third and last Test next week.
“The series victory will be a great morale-boost for the team ahead of the World Cup”, the PCB Chairman was quoted as saying when he talked with team captain Inzamamul Haq and other players by telephone after Pakistan had beaten South Africa by five wickets in the Second Test at Port Elizabeth.
Pakistan squared the series 1-1 and will now be looking to win the third Test to bring up their first-ever series victory in South Africa.
Speaking with Inzamam, the PCB Chairman lauded the role of every member of the team in the great victory at Port Elizabeth. He specially complimented the efforts of skipper Inzamamul Haq, vice captain Younis Khan and fast bowler Muhammad Asif.
“Keep it up. My message is that the Pakistan team still has a long way to go to win not only the Test and One-Day series but also the World Cup”, Dr. Nasim Ashraf told the Pakistan cricket team.
The ninth ICC Cricket World Cup will be played in the Caribbean in March-April this year.
The PCB Chairman also telephoned the Pakistan team management during Lunch break of the second Test at Port Elizabeth (South Africa) on Monday to inquire about the situation and pass on instructions, according to sources here.

Shabbir Ahmed called up

Shabbir Ahmed, the Pakistan fast bowler who served a 12-month ban for an illegal action, has been called up as a reinforcement for the side touring South Africa following injuries to Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul, both of whom are on their way home.
Shabbir’s last Test was against England at Multan, in November 2005. The ICC lifted his ban last December after receiving a detailed report from the Universiity of Western Australia, which conducted tests on the bowler’s action. “Shabbir is coming,” Inzamam-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain, said, “but I don’t know his condition.”
Shoaib was only a late addition to the squad, having been omitted originally on the grounds that he wasn’t fit. But he was called up as cover for Gul, who is suffering from an injured ankle, and returned spectacularly after a long lay-off, helping to skittle out South Africa for 124 in their first innings at Port Elizabeth with a four-wicket haul. The 11-over burst proved too much, a hamstring strain preventing him from bowling in the second innings.
“According to an interim medical report Shoaib has torn his hamstring and would require at least 14 days to recover,” Salim Altaf, the PCB’s director of operations, told the Karachi-based The News.
To compound matters, TV channels also broadcast what appeared to be a heated argument between Shoaib and Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, before the start of play on the second day of the Test. There has been speculation about the nature of the argument but no official word has been forthcoming. Altaf said that Talat Ali, the team manager, will conduct an inquiry into the incident.
“I have talked with Talat on this particular incident,” said Altaf. “The manager has assured the board that he would conduct an inquiry and then take action if required. The board has told the manager that it would support any decision he takes over the issue.”
Shoaib’s injury isn’t the only headache for the management, with Gul’s ankle injury not improving and Shoaib Malik yet to play any part in the series. Malik, too, is suffering from an ankle injury and is considered a doubtful starter for the third Test, starting at Newlands on January 26. He is, however, expected to be fit for the one-day series.
“Talat has told us that the management would have a meeting tonight at which it would decide about the fate of the squad’s injured players,” Altaf said. “Unfortunately, Gul and Malik have not responded to the treatment they have been receiving for the last several days.”

No question about it. The quicker more citizens like him are banned (and subsequently hanged), even more quick will the doors and windows open for Mohammad Sami to continue to be a hideous part of our journey and display his enormous amount of untapped hidden talent.
