Pakistan Team - developments and news (merged)

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

^ Even though we would want him to be part of the senior squad but it is highly unlikely, atleast he should be included in A tours. He was highest scorer of the tournament as well as most wickets taker.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

errmm.. mate I was talking about his run up etc not actual talent. If he had Shoaib's talent he wouldnt be rotting in the domestics. :D

Cheers.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

razzaq will be more useful in the one dayers.not that big a loss. The biggest concern for pakistan is the future of Shoaib and Asif right now,i dont know how long will it take for the tribunal in switzerland to deliver their verdict on them, the trial starts in the first week of january i''ve heard.if they get banned before the world cup then pak can longer be considered one of the favorites to lift the world cup.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

20/20 tournament really impressed me this time, particualry team from Sialkot and Karachi both played very professionally and did not rely on tulla baazi (cross bats). Fielding was also upto the mark with a few exceptions here and there, overall standard was very good. When you have bowlers like Rana, Asif, Sami, Imran Fazil, Anwer Ali, Umer Gul bowling quality was very evident. Spin department was also excellent, there are so many names that it was difficult to keep track. Biggest disappointment was Shoaib Akhter, he was clearly not fit. niether did he show any enthusiasm. Point being, no matter who goes to SA or the Worldcup, future of Pak cricket appears to be bright.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Thats if the selection is done on merit not on prefrence.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Imran Nazir batted brialliantly? Come on man. Don’t just look at the runs here. Have you seen him play the Semis and Final. To me he was trying to hit EVERY SINGLE BALL which in my opinion (and also the opinions of former cricketrs like Mohsin, Moin, Aqib etc) ain’t gonna fly in international cricket against international bowlers. I was REALLY surprised to see him bat. Surprised in the sense that, I guess, nobody, has talked to him about his senseless hitting so far. He has talent, no doubt, BUT, the way he was trying to hit every ball was very very un-impressive. Shoaib Malik, on the other end, batted with a lot of common sense. Shahid Alam batted beautifully. I think if anybody deserves a chance, it is Shahid Alam.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Shahid Alam ya phir Fawad Alam?

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

He was playing "Twenty20"... thats the requirement of the game.

Asif set to be picked for South Africa tour

Pakistan are considering sending an extended 17-member squad for next month’s tour of South Africa, according to Iqbal Qasim, who is standing in for chief selector Wasim Bari. The team is due to be announced on December 29.
Qasim, a former Test cricketer, said the selectors still have to take a couple of key decisions before announcing the squad. “We are undecided on the final composition and are also considering including an extra member in the squad,” he said.
The national team probables are currently in a conditioning camp at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, ahead of the tour that begins on January 6 with a tour match against South Africa A.
** Pakistan are unlikely to make any surprise changes in the Test squad that won the home series against the West Indies 2-0 earlier this season though Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan seamer involved in the drug controversy along with Shoaib Akhtar, is sure to make a comeback.
Shoaib, however, remains doubtful after having failed to impress much in the few domestic games he took part in recently. **
Shoaib and Asif missed the Champions Trophy and the series against the West Indies because of the ban for testing positive for nandrolone. However, the two were cleared by an appeals committee earlier this month and are available for the tour of South Africa.
** While Asif has proved his form and fitness in the recently concluded Twenty20 Cup, Shoaib is yet to convince the selectors. **
Qasim, who was in Lahore to witness the conditioning camp on December 27, refrained from commenting on Shoaib’s physical fitness. “We have seen Shoaib play in domestic matches and also in the camp,” he said. “The bowler remains in contention for a place in the team.”
** If Shoaib is overlooked for the tour of South Africa, Mohammad Sami is most likely to get the selectors’ nod. :crying:**
Sami was dropped from the Test squad against West Indies after a disappointing tour of England this summer in which he took eight wickets at 58.25 from three Tests. But he returned for the last two one-day games against West Indies and took two wickets for 76 from two matches.
Another decision to be considered, Qasim said, involved the inclusion of a reserve wicket-keeper for the tour, an idea suggested by Bob Woolmer, the coach. Pakistan A team’s Zulqarnain Haider is expected to be included in touring party as cover for Kamran Akmal.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Hope Asif does play.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Asif did bowl a hell of a lot better then other bowlers. Rana might have provided more wickets but Asif troubled the batsmen a lot more. A lot of edges going to the boundry made for unflattering figures at times but he is a class bowler. Shoaib will also pull through when the International tour starts.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

:smack: Samiullah ne kia gunah kia hai?

chalo… kuchh to awaam ki sunwaai hai

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Akmal would be under pressure if a reserve wicket keeper goes, which is the it should be with world class sides. If someone is going through a lean patch there should be a replacement handy, which also keeps the players on their toes.

Re: Pakistan Team - developments and news

Oh No... Not Sami again...

I think that selectors kuch aucha sun ti hai, thats why jab awam ni bola Samilullah to Sami key bad un to awaz nahi gai aur un ho ney Sami ko select kar liya. Phir sey. Hai, hamari kismat.

Shoaib, Shabbir unlikely to make SA tour squad
http://www.dawn.com/2006/12/29/spt1.htm
KARACHI, Dec 28: With Pakistan squad scheduled to be announced on Friday, the selectors were still undecided on picking fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for the South Africa tour.

Until Thursday evening the deliberations continued in the absence of the chairman of selectors Wasim Bari, who is in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.

The remaining selectors Iqbal Qasim, the acting chairman, and Ehteshamuddin, had not yet developed a consensus whether to gamble with Shoaib despite the 31-year-old speedster’s lacklustre performance in recent domestic matches and current fitness.

According to reliable sources, Shoaib is almost certain to miss the first part of the tour that features Tests at Centurion (Jan 11-15), Port Elizabeth (Jan 19-23) and Cape Town (Jan 26-30), mainly because he failed to impress the selectors during the short-training camp set-up in Lahore for the challenging tour.

The maverick pacer could, however, be in contention for the subsequent series of five One-day Internationals to be played between Feb 4 and 14 if he were to regain match fitness and form.

The sources indicated that fellow fast bowler Mohammad Sami is likely to replace Shoaib since lanky pacer Shabbir Ahmed is also not being considered as he still needs more time to get into the groove after serving a one-year ban for a suspect bowling action.

But Pakistan would undoubtedly be pleased with the availability of Mohammad Asif who looked sharp and helped Sialkot Stallions retain Twenty20 Cup title in Karachi this week.

Asif and Shoaib were earlier exonerated in the doping scandal by a PCB-appointed appellate panel earlier this month after being slapped with bans by a previous commission that found them guilty of using banned steroid nandrolone.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has challenged the overturn of the bans in the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sports. But until now the Pakistan Cricket Board, which is adamant that the issue was an internal matter, has not heard anything from either WADA or the ICC.

Unless there is further development on this front, Pakistan have the luxury of selecting the best possible squad. It also means both Shoaib and Asif remain in contention for the World Cup selection.

Meanwhile, the 17-member Test squad for South Africa is expected to be dominated by batsmen, including the nearly-forgotten Asim Kamal, who played the last of his 12 Tests against England at Lahore 13 months ago, and Yasir Hameed.

Asif is likely to spearhead the five-man pace artillery with Danish Kaneria the solitary specialist spinner while Abdur Rehman, the slow left-armer, earmarked for the ODIs.

The selectors were also unsure about the probable inclusion of Zulqarnain Haider, a regular in Pakistan ‘A’ team, as backup to first-choice wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal keeping in mind the World Cup which begins in the Caribbean barely weeks after the tour ends.

The Pakistan squad leaves for Johannesburg on Tuesday night. National coach Bob Woolmer, physio Darryn Lifson and trainer Murray Stevenson are already in South Africa where they are enjoying the Christmas and New Year holidays with their families. The trio would join the squad before the three-day match against South Africa ‘A’ in Kimberley from Jan 6.

**POSSIBLE SQUAD: **Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Younis Khan (vice-captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Faisal Iqbal, Asim Kamal, Kamran Akmal, Zulqarnain Haider, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Umar Gul, Shahid Nazir, Mohammad Asif, Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Sami.
