Thousands rally against new PEMRA law

LAHORE: Thousands of lawyers and opposition activists held demonstrations across Pakistan on Thursday to condemn government moves to curb press freedom.

The biggest protest was in Lahore, where some 2,000 lawyers and 3,000 others – including opposition workers, journalists, students, teachers and rights activists – marched on The Mall shouting anti-government slogans to express solidarity with the media. Workers of the PPP, PML-N, MMA, Tehrik-e-Insaaf and ANP waved party flags and pictures of their leaders at the demonstration.

Lawyers burned copies of the new PEMRA Ordinance, and scuffled with police inside the Lahore High Court when a judge ordered police to arrest them, according to an AFP reporter.

Lawyers across NWFP also observed a “black day”, boycotting court proceedings. Hundreds of them marched from the Peshawar High Court to Governor’s House. In Islamabad, opposition MNAs joined a protest by journalists in front of Parliament House against the PEMRA Ordinance.

Around 1,000 people marched from the press club to Governor’s House in Karachi chanting “Long live press freedom”. In Quetta around 100 journalists wearing black armbands walked out of the provincial assembly and joined another 1,000 lawyers, members of labour unions and opposition members of parliament.

Hundreds also demonstrated in Hyderabad and Multan.
