Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
very soon we will have 11 coaches and then we can ask ICC to let our coaches play the games instead of players.

Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Looking @ the old article from Ehsan bhai demonstrates that the fielding coach debate is as old as 2000 or even earlier.
In my opinion, appointing Jonty Rhodes just before the tour of Eng and not on permanent basis won't do any good for Pak team. I'm not against having a specialist fielding coach for our team but I think the position should be made for atleast a year so all the players and also the youngsters in the NCA can get the tricks from the fielding guru.
Appointing Jonty Rhodes only for a month or so and then asking for miracles in field is like applying brakes just before the train crossing. It's not easy to impact players like Inzi who are as sleepy in field as in their sleep. The mindset needs to be changed and for that we definitely need to bring an expert in the dept.
As far as Woolmer's job is concerned, I think he does a lot of other stuff that goes on psychologically with the team and also his help on batting techniques and all that. Woolmer in a sense will be restricted to batting and smaller issues but his presence has made a big difference in Pak team's attitude and ofcourse, Inzi has a big hand in that too.
So, appointing Rhodes isn't a bad idea but this should be done for atleast a year so players can reap the benefits completely rather than peridically.

I wonder Jonty will ever dare to disturb Inzy's sleep in the field...:D

‘I will assist Pakistan for two weeks’ - Rhodes
Jonty Rhodes has confirmed that he will work with the Pakistan cricket team on a short-term basis ahead of their tour to England this summer.
“I will be assisting Pakistan for only two weeks before their England tour,” Rhodes told the website gulfnews.com. “I have been invited by Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer. I would be going mainly to help them improve their fielding.”
Pakistan’s fielding in the 4-1 one-day series loss to India at home earlier this year, which some of the team management conceded was the worst in some time, sparked off the search for a fielding coach. Rhodes had been the preferred choice fromt the beginning.
Pakistan expect Rhodes to start work with the 25 probables for the England tour next month. Shaharyar Khan, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, expects to utilise Rhodes’s expertise to improve standards of senior players as well as members of the A team. He is also hoping to use Rhodes to work with trainees in the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
Rhodes, currently in Dubai to conduct a cricket clinic for young children on behalf of Standard Bank, said that fielding was a crucial element of cricket. “I am happy that every team is now focusing on improving their fielding. When South Africa went to Australia last year, they dropped 11 catches while Australians dropped just one. Australia beat us 2-0 in the series. If we had held those catches, the story would have been different.”
Hailed as one of the world’s greatest fielders, Rhodes said that the side which had the best fielders would lift next year’s World Cup in the Caribbean. “Australians are the favourites to win the next World Cup not because they are good with the bat and the ball but because they are good on the field too,” he said. “Pakistan, India, South Africa and New Zealand are all evenly matched. It is their fielding that will make the difference.”
However, a touch of patriotism remained for Rhodes. “Personally, I would love to back South Africa winning the World Cup,” he added. “They recently chased 434 to beat Australia. I believe that a team which can do that can also go on to achieve anything.”

Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
PCB shortlisted a bowling consultant and bowling coach in the form of Waqaaa, now the news of Jonty to join the Pakistan team for few weeks for hefty sum $$$ one of the bad ploy, I wish they had made good use of money and worked on the batting of Pakistan cricket team.
If they really wanted to work on the fitness of the players rather then their fielding they should really hire at PT trainer from Pakistan Army.
as for Woolmer, he is the luckiest man in Pakistan, I wish I was in his place, milking money and writing his "yaadien" and making more money and enjoying the delicious food from every part of Pakistan,
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Will appointing Rhodes for just two weeks really make much difference to the fielding standards? If they really want to improve the fielding standards then maybe they should hire him for a slightly longer term. Previously they have had the likes of Boycott as a batting consultant/coach for a similar time period. That didn't really make much difference to the batting.
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Maybe I should look for a job in PCB....hmmm I can help Bob with his laptop or I can assist him carry his laptop and just for that I will demand 1 million rupee from PCB. They will happily pay me. :)
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Woolmer won't agree unless you are a South African :D
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Jonty is only coming for a joy ride. I hope he remembers to bring his magic wand along otherwise there is no chance of improvement in this case!
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
you made my day ![]()
Even though I don’t completely agree with your pun. A short assignment to the wonderboy of the fielding history will definetely bring goods. They just need to practice on some plushy ground. I think there will be some improvement in our fielding. Or atleast the way we practice.

Javed Miandad opposes hiring of Rhodes
KARACHI, May 4 : Pakistan cricket legends Javed Miandad and Mushtaq Mohammad lashed out Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on hiring a fielding coach for the national team.
“It’s like a joke that somebody is coming to teach fielding to the players that include many ‘Test great’, who have played a lot of international cricket for their country”, Miandad told reporters on Wednesday.
PCB is set to hire South African Jonty Rhodes as the fielding coach for two weeks ahead of Pakistan’s high profile tour of England.
“No doubt fielding has been a gray area for the Pakistan team but I don’t think there is need for a specific fielding coach, as it is the duty of team’s coach,” he said.
Mushtaq , also a former skipper and coach of the national team, supported Miandad’s point of view saying hiring a fielding coach would be a useless exercise.
“Hiring fielding coach is not necessary because anyone who plays cricket can be a good fielder without anybody’s help, if he wants,” he added.
“Anyone who plays cricket can be a good fielder without anybody’s help” - Can anyone vouch this statement?
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
True, so can anyone who plays cricket can bat really well and bowl really well, why do we need all those coaches, just dump them all and let Inzamam coach the whole team while being the captain. We will see how good a fielder comes out of everyone, they will let the ball go between their legs thinking "I will makeup for those runs when batting", shmucks (Miandad and Mushtaq M).
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
its a good move... Pakistanis definitely need to learn the art of perfect 'gheesi' maarna. He can teach em the basics, and then they can practice!
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
They just need to practice on some plushy ground. I think there will be some improvement in our fielding. Or atleast the way we practice.
Do we have any plushy grounds in Pakistan?
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Thats what pisses me off. A place where plenty of grass grows without even anyone taken care of have meters of cricket ground with no grass at all, especially near the boundaries. Look at UAE, they have plush ground, in such a barren land.
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Totally agree - mate. They have to do something about this for the ICC trophy and the World cup. This is an area where attention needs to be played. The UAE have spent plenty of monery on their new ground and thats why it looks so beautiful and lush just like the Austrlian grounds, why can't the PCB do something like this in Pakistan.
The PCB excuse may be that they don't have overall control of the grounds in Multan, Pindi and Peshwar. However they have the control of Lahore & Karachi and they are no different.
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
Inzi is not there in any of the pictures. 14 years has passed but probably he is still mad at Rhodes on dismissing him in WC 92 ![]()
Re: Pakistan seek Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach
That is exactly one of the possible theories I proposed earlier to transfer the entire training camp from Lahore to Multan. The lush greenery and the sound environment that the ground and the area is now surrounded with, would have definitely made a difference or two in the overall standards of our fielding, if not increasing it to a much higher-level. Why in the world is Qaddafi Stadium prefered over those campgrounds where it should have been held in the first place will be left forever to answer.
