I am pretty sure, all this is done with the total confidence of the US government agencies. There are many CIA agents on the ground in that area and they must have observed the deteriorating situation and what it could have lead to.
Lets leave possibility of US taking action to cleanse the 'militias' in Pakistan for now, lets talk about 'history'. How many times US has been able to contain terrorists/guerilla-fighters/militias in past? You can probably contain some small group like if they take hostage of a plane, building but when they are as widespread as Hezbolla for example, or AlQaida then you can't really eliminate them by fighting. The reason you can't eliminate that way is that when you fight them by bombing you end up killing civilians, when civilians are killed then more civilians join the hands of those militias etc. The fight will just go on and on. When Afghanistan was invaded, US claimed that by toppling Taliban and capturing Osama everything will be under control while arm-chair-critics like myself said that it will only produce more ALQ members, do you see where we are today?
Let's face a little reality here. The Taliban was essentially the Frankenstein Monster of the ISI. It was their little creation. To imagine that today the Taliban is fighting their usual spring/summer offensive at the Pakistan border without the knowledge, tacit support, or active help of the ISI is just foolish. For Pakistani's to roll their eyes and say "we are doing the best we can" is naieve.
Yesterday the NATO commander said that he had nearly 700 Taliban bottled up. Today he is saying he needs reinforcements after 35 deaths in 38 days. It sounds like he knows he has a big fight on his hands, but that he senses that a crushing blow delivered now would take out a lot of Taliban, and perhaps would break them. Lets hope that we have 400 to 700 Rangers somewhere that we can move quickly so that we do not have another Tora Bora where these guys leak back over the border to fight another day. Now is time for Pakistan to seal up their border and make a stand.
Taliban wasn’t really the monster, it was converted into one when they defended the monster created by CIA.
One can keep dreaming that you can ‘crush’ them by bombing them to oblivion, but unfortunately for you they will only regrow and probably even outgrow their previous strength.
Actually the Taliban was created in 1992 to help Pakistan secure its trade convoys with Central Asian Countires....
and Pakistan did fear Russia as it could have very well marched into Balochistan with India tying up our forces in a war before indra ghandi was assassinated
if we look at the track record, I think Musharraf has done more than Bush, or at least he has been more strategic about it.
.
Tut tut Pir saab. Mush has fooled the world and that includes an otherwise intelligent man like you, in believing he has done everything possible. Truth be known, he has some first class (prolly American) help in writing attractive sound bites like "enlightened moderation", "engagement in fighting terrorism" an other such stuff. He wears Savoy tailered suits speaks far better English than that idiot MMS (that is Manmohan Singh for the unwashed), but as for doing anything, he is a big zero. Just see the implications of the recent agreement in waziristan. Pir saab anke kholo, sirf ek baar! Am I asking too much?
tut tut expat observer, tell me who has done 'enough"
let me start with my fearless leader who declared "mission accomplished"
our borders are not protected
our containers and ports are not secue
heck even the equipment oce mandated for all airports has been conveniently pushed under the rush
but yeah those color schemes are there i.e. if its yellow just observe Ahmed, if it is Orange, stalk him and shyt..
so while Musharraf has not cleansed out the country of all extremists, of which the targets are mostly locals and not Bill in poughkeepsie NY, it appears that all the big talkers have not done jack either.
Looking back at with us or against us, it seems like our lack of progress indicates we are against ourselves.
Apparently, the country which couldn't even condemn Russian inavasion of Afghanistan feels no shame in criticizing Pakistan's role in the battle. Some people are shameless. Utterly!
