Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Is Pakistan also going to pay attention to the fact that the reason India has extra electricity to sell to Pak is because their politicians built their dams to fulfill their needs.

Re: Pakistan Gives India ‘Most Favored Nation’ Trade Status

Trade with India is in the best interest of both the countries. But as I said earlier unless military approves it, it is not going to happen. Same thing happened to Gas Pipe Line project with Iran as Uncle Sam was not happy therefore military was not happy. That project is still in doldrums. Zardari’s government has no free hand in deciding key issues such as this one. Foreign affairs is still controlled by military. It is very unfortunate situation for the country. I wonder how Ik or NS would have dealt differrently? Would they uphold the sanctity of parliament or the military dictation knowing that such agreements would benefit Pakistan a lot, particularly in the field of heavy machinery, IT, Food, healthcare, Railways etc.

Civilians, military consulted on India trade

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Key civilian and military functionaries met on Friday to discuss the process of easing trade with India in the run-up to grant it the MFN (most favoured nation) status.

“As part of regular consultations, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar today consulted all stakeholders on foreign policy issues, including the resumed dialogue process with India, at the Foreign Ministry,” said a cautiously-worded press statement issued by the FO spokesperson’s office.

There was no mention of which ‘stakeholders’ attended the meeting presided over by the foreign minister. But according to a source, the meeting was attended by officials from the military, intelligence, ministries of interior, commerce and defence and the Foreign Office.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

The matter of granting MFN to India is a sensitive issue, and keeping that in mind the government should have opened a debate with the opposition, military and the business men. In this case it seems every one was ignored and the government due to pressure from 'abroad' went ahead solely and had to pull back due to internal pressure. This has happened so many times during this regime of people's party.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Well the day when we find out how governments are elected/selected this riddle will be solved.

1) If the governments are elected they are answerable to the people, if they are selected then that's another issue (they will remain indebted to the people selecting them)
2) If the government cant have its policies implemented then that's the failure of the government, nothing to be proud of

Re: Pakistan Gives India ‘Most Favored Nation’ Trade Status

People here in Talk shows at some Tv channels said that this was army’s move .
Pak Army ‘stakeholder’ in talks with India: KharAnd if you read this with an above mentioned linkhttp://www.dawn.com/2011/11/05/civil…dia-trade.htmlSaying"Civilians, military consulted on India trade

Now you can know the powerful partner is more interested in business with India .
They are doing the business more than anything and remember perhaps now they wanted to grab railway.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

I don't know what are talking about? Military still controls certain civilian functions, FA is one of them. I have asked you a question, how IK would have dealt differently? He is mum on FA and other key issues controlled by military, either he is afraid like others or he has no idea how to deal with this complex issue and continue to tow the military's line of thinking.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Hmmm... ISI needs more involvement in Bangladeshi politics. This would never have happened if the BNP was in power. The Awami League and its anti-Pakistan attitude is hostile to our national interest.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Well said sir ,
They should protect their business as they do in home .

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

My uncle was with the Pakistan Embassy in Dhaka during the Awami League's rule in the 90s. The Awami League let RAW openly operate there, following Pakistani diplomats and tapping their phones. At diplomatic gettogethers my uncle used to joke to his Indian counterparts they they should invite ISI to train them on how to tap phones without causing the lines to disconnect.

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

The time passed away.
Now they are doing business only .

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

What about Turkey?? Even Turkey voted against Pakistan in WTO. Should ISI get involved in the politics of Turkey as well???

Re: Pakistan Gives India 'Most Favored Nation' Trade Status

Doesnt the Bengali economy rely heavily on Textiles, and wouldnt they feel threatned by competition from Pakistan? This seems more like protectionism then outright hostility.

Re: Pakistan Gives India ‘Most Favored Nation’ Trade Status

This is the difference between Pakistani and Indian rulers. While Pakistani government decided to give India MFN status without even bothering to discuss with other stake holders/people of Pakistan. Gillani begs Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan during the recently concluded Saarc summit, but the later tells him that he will have to take into account Indian public opinion before proceeding to a visit of Pakistan.

**ADDU, MALDIVES: **Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he wanted relations to improve with Pakistan however, attached some conditions while accepting Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s invitation to visit Pakistan.

**Speaking to reporters on his flight back from the SAARC summit in Maldives, Singh said that the two nations should resolve its issues through dialogue, however no progress could be made until Pakistan took sufficient steps against the perpetrators of the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai.
**
The Indian Premier said he will visit Pakistan only when the two countries can do something solid together. However, he acknowledged that the relations between him and Gilani had grown since their last meeting.

“Our approach to Pakistan is trust but verify. We are not putting blind faith in one individual (Gilani). I do hope it will genuinely lead to the normalisation of relations,” he said.

**Linking the peace process to the Mumbai attack, he said he will take public opinion in India concerning the attack into account before going ahead with dialogue.
**
If Manmohan Singh visits Pakistan, it will be the first prime ministerial visit from India since 2004 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Pakistan for the SAARC summit.
