Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

Read my words carefully, pal. I said "Pakistan was intended to be a secular nation." Which is why it's stupid for the government to even use the removal "blasphemous content" as an excuse to shut down a popular public website.

And yes I totally agree. There's obviously a reason other than what they claim as to why it was banned.

Can Pakistanis still get past the block with proxies?

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

wow...

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

Pakistan was intended to be a nation built on Islamic principles. The sole purpose of the creation of Pakistan was to safeguard the values of Muslims of India at the time.

The actions of todays Politicians are anything but Islamic.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

:-)

Well, what I said was that I wouldn't want to emphasize this line of reasoning to oppose blocking YouTube. First of all, no one really can claim a 100% bullet proof case whether Pakistan was built to be an Islamic republic or secular or whatever. More over it doesn't matter, for this particular example, if the government wants to remove blasphemous content that can possibly incite people (to protests) then I think its a valid concern. Other countries have done the same thing many times. I think YouTube is banned in several countries. However, I think YouTube is a much more general purpose and useful site. So a more appropriate response would be to approach YouTube and get those videos removed, rather than banning the whole thing.

On a personal level, I am a believer that people should make their own choices in terms of what they chose to watch or not watch. And we should not have an over-bearing government deciding this for its citizenry. Again, I say that from my view point. I am pretty sure, with low levels of education and demonstrated non-sensical protests in the past (burning down KFC's and MacDonalds, burning university buses and many deaths), government in Pakistan believes otherwise.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

^ Well, lets say Pakistan's own ban to restrict YouTube for people inside Pakistan was/is entirely deliberate. The unintended result where YouTube was blocked for pretty much everyone in the world was stupidity.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

I personally believe, govt banned it for POLITICAL purposes (election rigging etc) ....

'cauz there are like gazillions of sites against Islam and Prophet (saw). Even on youtube, there have been tons of anti-Islamic videos for long time .... why would govt become so religious all of sudden.

Also, anti-Mush videos have been there for long .... the only noticeable new thing was ELECTION RIGGING videos .... probably the MQM goons got upset and showed their terror at YOUTUBE this time :)

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

agree, i meant what you've said .... fixed it.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

Apparently bad routing updates caused youtube to be down for much of the world. I don’t know why and how the update was passed as fastest route :hehe: to youtube but it was a sad mistake, to say the least. Pak Telecom folks should go back and study BGP again and prevent this from happening again.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

No

Pakistan was build as a Secular Democracy where Muslims will be a majority but will have significant non-muslim minorities

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

Tunneling is always a posibility as long as the tunneling sites are not blocked as well. It works in dubai It will work in Pak too.

(strange, the buttons now do work)

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

lol...I like that

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

Yea but there are countless numbers of proxy sites so can they really block every one of them?

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

Theoretically yes. But such proxy tunneling sites use complex url-redirect methods. At times It's hard to prevent those sites to be doubled. Remember one site can have 2-10 mirror sites (all with different urls). So It is more dependend on the site setup, rather than how many sites there are.

I remember Etisalat needed 1 year to block a "proxy site", which had most compatible proxy tunneling scripts embedded (some sites block use of proxy too).

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

This may be over the top - I don't know.. But do you really think the people who are prone to protests and riots have access to the internet? What percentage of Pakistanis do, anyways?

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

This certainly got everyone's attention. By the way, in a NYT report today, Pakistan had complained to YouTube about the video of a Danish filmmaker where he announced plans to make a movie criticizing Islam, and after this, YouTube has removed that video. As a bynote, Government of Pakistan (i.e. PTA) has restored access to YouTube inside Pakistan.

I wonder how often Pakistan will keep resorting to website blocking, because there will always be losers out there, who will keep uploading obnoxious video clips on YouTube.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube

Its not so much that all rioters see something on the internet and come out on the streets. Someone sees it, then tells others that something like this is publicly available, and then others join the protest without seeing it. This is fairly common. All you need is an emotional religious leader to incite people and then this thing just grows exponentially just by itself. People are usually very emotional about religious issues.

When Satanic Verses came out, back in the day, to my knowledge no maulana ever admitted that they read the book, but all of them were vociferously criticizing the book and the author based on what **they have heard **is in the book: blasphemy.

Re: Pakistan blocks access to YouTube [Merged]

Didn't they block BLOGS a while ago too? Pssh, people found ways to get around that, this youtube nonsense isn't going to work either. The government needs to invest their time in doing better things.
