they wanted to block access only to that one video about Muhammad (s.a.w) that was deemed "blasphemous", but some ISP's in Pakistan use the PIE pipeline (basically a fibre-connection to the interenet) and others use the TWA pipeline. The ISP's that use the PIE pipeline blocked all of youtube because they don't have the technology to block a specific link (like the one for the video) . The ISP's on the TWA line have the technology to block specific links and so only that video was blocked not all of youtube. But that video is now taken off by Youtube because of violation of terms and conditions so youtube should be back in Pakistan. It's kind of stupid to block whole websites or parts of websites if you ask me. If it's offensive then don't watch it. Or better yet ignore it.
You gotta love the crocodile tears and excuses they come up with.
IMHO they blocked youtube because the stuff news media can’t show on TV due to PAMRA ends up on youtube, thus a click away for people who want the ‘unedited/uncut’ scenes.
Pakistan’s attempts to block access to YouTube has been blamed for an almost global blackout of the video website for more than an hour on Sunday.
BBC News has learned that the outage was almost certainly connected to Pakistan Telecom and Asian internet service provider PCCW.
A leading net professional said the global outage was “probably a mistake”.
Pakistan ordered internet service providers to block the site because of content deemed offensive to Islam.
The BBC News website’s technology editor, Darren Waters, says that to block Pakistan’s citizens from accessing YouTube it is believed Pakistan Telecom “hijacked” the web server address of the popular video site.
Those details were then passed on to the country’s internet service providers so that anyone in Pakistan attempting to go to YouTube was instead re-directed to a different address.
But the details of the “hijack” were leaked out into the wider internet from PCCW and as a result YouTube was mistakenly blocked by internet service providers around the word
The block on the servers was lifted once PCCW had been told of the issue by engineers at YouTube.
**Maddy **Thanks for that. Great! Just when I think that Pakistani government has become boring and nothing interesting is going on withthem, they come up with something stupid and get back in the business.
Yeah they knew based on the IP, who was born in Pakistan or whose parents were born in Pakistan. Whoever’s IP had anyone in the house somehow related to Pakistan, they blocked it for them. Great technology! Phatima, you are so dumb
government of pak has every right to block demeaning or blasphemous content in every way possible. there is nothing wrong in doing that. if other governments can block and censor websites and content on the bases of national security and hatred then why Pakistani government can't do that same? I'm sure Denmark will have no problem in screening an anti-muhammad or anti-islam or anti-Quran movie but will they ever allow a movie about holocaust and doubts raise about it? i think not.

Pakistan has absolutely no right to do what it did
Internet is not a Pakistani owned domain unlike PTV or such
I have infact watched many anti-Islamic movies and documentaries
It hasn't fazed me a bit in regards to my beloved Religion but only made my conviction in Islam even stronger
I can understand blocking "content on the basis of national security" but the reason they used for blocking youtube was that it had blasphemous content on it. Pakistan was intended to be a secular nation. Clearly it won't get anywhere with this kind of an approach.
And if the reason for blocking Youtube was really because it contained content deemed offensive to Islam, then how come they don't block all public forums and blogs as well because those tend to contain such content as well.
Do you really think YouTube is putting a dent on Islam
It's the excuse they used like Ijaz-ul-Haq's crocodile tears on Capitol Talk...what a load of ****
The matter of the fact is that because of PEMRA the news media cannot broadcast everything they used to. So some of that 'uncut/unedited' stuff is leaked on the internet for those that want to hear it and see it.
That's the issue Government has. It has nothing to do with Islam being hijacked. If anything Islam is all for human rights, where was Islam and the respect for it when women were being dragged with their dupattas flying all over the place and mind u by force, and in most cases by Male Policemen.
I mean c'moooooooooooooooonnn...and then they say Islam is getting a bad name. If people are going to use Islam as a scapegoat, they're doing more harm to the religion then they are service.
^ I don't think I would want to go down the route of "Pakistan is a secular nation".
The whole issue that a government will ban a website (a fairly popular general purpose website, and not a bonafide hate site) to block all people in Pakistan from accessing blasphemous content is very silly. Internet is full of all kinds of content. There are all kinds of extreme hatred sites, forums, porn sites etc. Its like banning Google or Yahoo. Makes no sense.
My suspicion is that there is something else in play here. The issue of blasphemous content is just a smoke screen. May be its those video clips that are uploaded to YouTube that show blantant rigging in the elections.
Maybe some of our ‘enraged’ fellow guppies reported youtube for having such evidence for all to view, hence the Government a.k.a. PML(Q) taking an action against access to the site :CareBear:
It amazes me these vaderas and chaudries and goons sitting in these leadership positions underestimate Pakistanis so much - I mean you’d think that in their mind, they must be viewing us as no more aware of the world as the budha babba that picks their wheat for them, who has never travelled a day outside his village in his life.
Don’t they get that doing stuff like this doesn’t accomplish anything and in the end makes them look dumb? Pakistanis will find a way to access all kinds of unIslamic things, and their own kids are partying it up at cocaine-filled raves.
I wonder if playboy is banned. :halo: I mean, if you’re going to go all crazy over unIslamic websites…
