well the BINdian trash is still coming on, all cable operators have stuck different logos in the corner of the indian ones.

Re: Pakistan blacks Indian TV Channels

It is a great move.
Our values and culture must be a distinct one.
Hindureligion is all "Naach Gana". They even worship while dancing naked and nude

Pakistan is very different. We have to protect our generation from such vulgarity and eroticism

Re: Pakistan blacks Indian TV Channels

Cultural ties can’t be one way, not a single Pakistani channel is shown in India, so why should we allow their channels to operate freely and propogate their agenda?

Re: Pakistan blacks Indian TV Channels

ok give it a rest. Here are the reasons why Pakistani government along with the ministry of media decided to ban the ** free ** broadcast of indian channels on local cable:

  • Loss of revenue to local channels (when people watch indian channels, our channels wont get the same viewership and thus lose out on revenue generated from commercials)
  • Government wants to give local channels healthy domestic competition (Currently pakistan has 35 local channels, in the next six months half a dozen more channels are expected to go on air, ministry for media wants these channels to have a better chance at being watched at already clogged up bandwidth)
  • Propoganda (lets face it indians are not showing our channels either)

The final point is if anybody really wants to watch indian channels than they need to pay for it. Government doesnt want them to be readily broadcasted so that loss of revenue could be prevented and Pakistani media should be given a boost. Nobody is stopping you from putting up a dish antenna and paying for the available indian channels if you wish to watch them. I hope this clears up some confusion. The decision has nothing to do with patriotism or any such emotional agenda.

The Indo-Pak cable war

Pakistani cable operators have warned their government that they would stop showing local channels if the ban on Indian channels continues. Last month the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned operators from screening 35 foreign TV channels, a majority of which were Indian.

**
Khalid Arain, vice-chairman, Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (CAP), told Sunday Mid Day, “We had told the government that we would wait for a month to see if the ban is lifted or else we’ll take action. If the ban is not lifted we will stop showing Pakistani entertainment channels.”

Cable operators have suffered huge losses due to the ban because a majority of their clientele are addicted to Indian channels and have withdrawn their subscriptions. “In just a little over two weeks since the ban our revenues have fallen almost 50 percent,” says Arain. He adds, “Most people love to watch movies and soaps on Indian channels. This ban is a huge loss for them too.”

Some Indian channels, Star Plus in particular, are a big revenue source for cable operators because of their immense popularity among the Pakistanis especially the female population who seldom miss any episodes of daily soaps.
**

While cable operators dismiss any political motive behind the ban they admit that it could have been due to pressure from the local Pakistani media who don’t get as high a subscriber base as Indian channels. Local media owners have lately formed their own group — Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) who have also become equal stakeholders in the current situation.

“The owners of Pakistani channels can do this but we can’t satisfy our clients without Indian channels. So we will opt for extreme action after meeting with the PBA. We will ask them not to support the ban or else they too will suffer the same fate,” says Arain.

“We’ll wait for two weeks for the controversy to be settled,” says Tahir Khan, another CAP official.

**
The PEMRA has been withdrawing and imposing bans on cable operators in the country since satellite TV was introduced in the 1990s. “PEMRA continues to warn us of stern action for showing harmless entertainment channels. Now our business is again at a crossroads,” says Khan.

This is the second time that operators have locked horns with authorities over this issue. In 2003, they temporarily blacked out local channels due to a ban on the screening of Indian channels.
