Re: Overweight kids

if you ensure that he gets lots of exercise in the day then he will sleep well even without the extra bottles.
good for you for recognizing the early signs and trying to correct the matter before it becomes out of your control.

in sha Allah his weight will turn around in the right direction and you will help him to develop healthy habits.

Re: Overweight kids

how tall is your son and what does your paed say about this?
my husband is 6’7" and so we knew all along that the kid would be a big kid too. he was 9.5lbs at birth and now at 17 months, he’s about 34 lbs BUT his height is also off the charts. he’s as tall as most 2.5 year olds and he wears size 2-3 year clothing masha’Allah. if your kid is proportional height and weight-wise then i wouldn’t worry too much.

also, in terms of oatmeal, try mixing berries in with it. thats how i give it to my kid- oatmeal with a handful of raspberries, blueberries or blackberries. he loves it and that’s his breakfast every morning. for lunch, its usually ghara ka khana, and same for dinner. he’s on regular milk now but as DA said, he’s allowed 24 oz in a 24 hour period so that comes out to 4 x 6oz bottles. he didn’t protest much at the cutting back since he’s now eating more real food than just relying on milk for food.

if you have an indoor playground near you, maybe try hopping on the bus and taking him? it can be a bit of a pain, i know, but they have such a good time it kind of makes up for it. also, i love taking mine to the mall. wide open space, smooth ground and barely any people during the weekdays so he can run to his heart’s content. plus its indoors and heated so thats awesome too. is there a mall near you that you can go to? kids his age don’t necessarily need structured play all the time- they just need to run around.

My son is on charts for his height not for his weight. So although he is tall he still falls within the range of that age group. His doc has told me that he is overweight. Just recently he has started gaining more and more. He has adviced to cut his milk and increase his activity level. Obviously I am not doing enough. I would want him to be close to 30lbs by March. I will try oatmeal with different things you guys have suggested.
I don’t live close enough to walk to the mall or even take a bus. Walk around the neighborhood is the only thing I can do.

Re: Overweight kids

Then do that! Its cold here now, too, and I still bundle up the kid and let him loose on the streets every morning. The fresh air does them good and I find he’s not as bothered by the cold as I am but I just suck it up and do it anyway

As others have suggested, the likely culprit here is the formula. If he’s not responding well to regular milk, have you had him checked for lactose intolerance? Maybe he needs lactose free milk?

Re: Overweight kids

its ok spiral if you are not able to take him out, i am also not able to do that but plan something inside like i mentioned before play jumping jumping with him n throw the ball n ask him to bring it to you ask him to clean with you my baby loves doing dusting with me, i give her small piece of cloth n there she starts cleaning all the sofas and following me :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Overweight kids

my daughter was over weight when she was 1.5 too. She was close to 45 pounds. It was mainly the milk consumption - she had 6 bottles of whole milk a day. One we cut off her milk she deflatted. We also put her on 2% organic milk and increased her protein.

Re: Overweight kids

Thank you so much ladies for reassuring me that he’ll be fine. I’ve already made changes and I am surprised that he doesn’t even ask for milk. I think I used to give him milk and he would just not say no although he may not be hungry. Now he doesn’t care if he doesn’t get it. I got him oats for morning DA. Will see tomorrow.

I’ve struggled with weight issues all my life and I didn’t want him to struggle.

Re: Overweight kids

My daughter at 7 years and a few months is also 40 lbs. I guess its just the way they are built. People come in all shapes and sizes and so do kids.

Re: Overweight kids

My daughter wears a size 4T in pants.

Re: Overweight kids

Too much milk can also lead to low iron so you are doing the right thing.
