i think opposites attract initially but its a short lived fascination, a spark which dies out pretty soon when you don't see things eye to eye on day to day issues, then it just becomes a struggle to get a word in.
I've either heard or read that according to (research?) relationships are more likely to be successful if the the couple has more similarities.....especially regarding major aspects (education, religion, etc).
Being opposite to one another in smaller things....such as preference for movies, likes/dislikes....adds some interest and spark. But extreme differences and too many of them may make things more challenging.
I wouldn't treat the "opposites attract" saying is black or white. Because you have to factor in what those "opposite" qualities are and how many of those "opposite" qualities there are. Type and amount would make a difference, I think.
Also, I've noticed that opposite temperaments can sometimes be better for a relationship. For example, I know of two couples where the wives are very domineering and loud and high strung.....and their husbands are more relaxed and patient. And had these women married someone who was just as domineering and headstrong as them....I doubt it would last very long.

i believe that everyone should be forced to marry the opposite, culture wise. I would produce a colour chart system.

Not necessarily personality wise. However, one thing for sure as Allah has created balance in every relationship of some sort. Therefore, opposite might attract to a degree.

They say opposites attract. However many times upon seeing a couple who are as different as day and night, it's often said that they are two different I dont see how they make it work.
Isn't the yin supposed to balance out the yang? Yin yang are complementary opposites within a greater whole.
So guys when choosing a spouse would you like to choose someone that is exactly like you, looks, habits, etc...
Or would you dare to take a risk and find someone that is opposite of you?

She is a cleanliness freak, I wear same socks for a week
She is always late, I hate being late
She love veg food, I love non veg food
She want to spend more time at home, I want to be social a lot
She has lose temper, I am calm an quite
She is brave to say sorry, I am not that brave
She is not into sports too much, I love sports

Sometimes it really doesn't matter if they are different, as long as you are comfortable being with them. if they are different and you aren't having any sort of attraction, obviously, the relationship fails miserably.
example:
don't ask for the guy/girl to be funny, ask him/her to laugh!
dating a stand-up comic is not always that great.
another:
Don't look for a guy/girl with the same career...just ask him to admire his/her passion.

It goes 50/50. It all depends on what you're looking for, on what attracts you! Similarities can be from anything like watching the same types of tv shows to just your idea of a romantic night and differences can be anything from politics to music. All these cause a relationship to grow if the couple communicates and that communication opens up possibilites that may not have existed if they didn't talk to each other!
