ISLAMABAD, Nov 29: A patient underwent open-heart surgery here in which no anesthesia was administered to him. “We have
performed open-heart surgery, on a patient who was awake, by employing modern technique,” said Dr Mubashar Zia, assistant
professor of anesthesia, Punjab Institute of Cardiology, on Wednesday. He added that this was the first time not only in Pakistan but also in the world.
The duration of the operation was two and a half hours, he said. The operation was performed at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology by Surgeon Jawad Sajjad with the assistance of Dr Mubashar Zia.
Through this technique, the patients of asthma could also be operated upon, Dr Zia said. The interesting aspect of the operation was that the patient had talked and even asked for water, he added.-APP
Quite an interesting operation Momin.
The fact the the patient asked for water tells me he wasn't ventilated. You can't speak with a ventilation tube down your throat.
I wonder how the patient survived an open heart procedure without ventilatory support? The negative pressure created by chest wall expansion which is so necessary for pulmonary ventilation can not be created if the chest wall is opened- the patient's lungs would collapse and the patient would asphyxiate.
And what kind of technique was used to reduce pain? They seem to have kept quiet about that. It sounds like a sham to me......

Guys its, ahem, NOT possible! The person would die when u open their chest! Believe me, I talked to a surgeon in Oxford about this 2day.
That's not to say that excellent medical work doesn't go on in Pakistan, it certainly does. Just not this kind of whacko op.
There has been a misunderstanding either on behalf of the doctors involved or the reporter.
But I appreciate your interest in medicine Momin Sahab :)

I am wondering at the same points!!!
and what about local aneasthetics?? how can u rip open a chest wall without giving an anesthetic! my minds not expecting that really!!may be the reporters have interpreted the announcement in some other sense than the docs wanted to explain......
