Re: Olympics Judo: Saudi Arabian Athelete in Hijab Dispute
Well as a a man who understands Judo it is quite limiting for those who wear the gi to fight with those who are taught to fight without gi... the Gi is basically the Japanese Judo suits, even wearing those can be a problem when fighting becuase you can actually manipulate your opponent by tugging at and working with the Gi while grappling.
Offcourse the greatest masters are capable of fighting in Gi, so why not Hijab wearers? Admittedly Judo has less strike elements than say Tae Kwondo which is better suited to loose garments but either way one should be allowed to fight in whatever garb one chooses. The fighter is ussually aware of the risks in wearing more loose garb or tighter garb, both have advantages and dis-advantages but the greater variety the better the fights, if everybody used the same style there would be no room for development.
Re: Olympics Judo: Saudi Arabian Athelete in Hijab Dispute
If you can't follow rules of a competition, better not compete in it.
Saudis can have their own national games where women can choke each other using their scarves and no one is stopping them from doing so.
Rules should be able to accommodate as many people as possible and they are in this case. Although I personally wouldn't compete in such sports if another Muslim woman wants to wear the hijab and compete and a compromise can be reached than who am I to stop her? I am not saying all rules should be thrown out but again if things can be worked out than that's good.
Re: Olympics Judo: Saudi Arabian Athelete in Hijab Dispute
I don't know if it is a good idea to invite contestants with little to no experience, and from what I am reading, Judo athletes are quite upset that this is being allowed as it goes against the principles of the sport. Hmmm, let's see.

^resoectfully disagree with the H lady. I think a nice compromise has been reached. Pretty incompetent of thexSaudis ant IOC to leave this till the last minute. Flip side - it brought some attention to the sport - though I wont watch it -enough violence as is.
