Re: Obsession with Culture
Buddy, simple fact is that if the 100 lashes or what not, is a part of islamic constitution set by the Allah (through the Quran and his Prophet Sallallah Alaih Wasalam) , then as muslims it is a musalmans duty to follow them.
If you choose to ignore/disobey/disbelieve in them it is your own doing and you yourself are responsible for it, not us, not anyone else. No one else answers for any others deeds and beliefs.
So let the muslims who choose to believe in their religion do so, if you disbelieve in it thats your choice, you of all donot have any right to enforce it on anyone else.
Irem, i agree, many parts of our culture are against islamic beliefs and values and as such it is our duty, as practicing muslims and intelligent human beings, to denounce them.

Adding to Maniac's response:
When you commit a sin there are three things that can be done about it.
If you were to choose between options 2 and 3, option 2 is definitely the one to go with. Reason being, say in the case of 100 lashes, you only (yes, ONLY) get 100 lashes and you avoid the Wrath of Allah. If you do not take option 2 and wait to go to hell and take option 3 then you wont only get 100 lashes but you'll be getting 100 lashes for eternity and then what God does to you.. God only knows.
In a nutshell, punishment on earth is brief, temporary. Punishment in the Hereafter is endless. Which one would you rather choose?
Re: Obsession with Culture
I take Pride in my culture - race, double Pride in positive practices. I am thankful to Allah SWT for making me a part of Afghan - Aryans - Pashtuns.
Regarding the Ashura, we'll that seems purely un-Islamic, and i do not know what that all is about, maybe a sort of punishment from God.
