Obligation of Hijab

Peace Miss_Noland

The word Hijab is not Qur’anic but rather it comes from hadith. Hijab does not mean face veil or head scarf. These have their own names niqaab and khimar are the terms. The literal words used in Qur’an in Surah 24:31 and translated are:

Wal-yadribna bi khumuri hinna 'ala juyubihinna

And they should draw their khimars over their breasts

Hijab comes from the 3rd person past tense singular masculine root word Hajaba which means “he prevented”

so hijab means “he/it veiled/covered/protected him/it”

incidentally Haajib is the word for door keeper or chamberlain also sharing the same root.

And continued here … read the left column …

In this passage is a sentence in Arabic;

Al-ma’siyatu Hijabun baynal 'abdi wa baynal rabihi - meaning ~
Disobedience is a bar between a servant and his Lord

From here it is evident that Hijab is more than a physical thing it includes intangible or allegorical forms of the word to prevent and such that is a barrier between.

Khimar again is very much a covering. It is a muffler or head scarf but linguistically it is something that covers over. It can be applied again to the intangible.

Khimar comes from the same root as the word for alcohol in Arabic which is khamr - khamr covers over the intellect and subdues the senses likewise a khimar covers over the item that it is laid over.

Read again the left hand column.

The normal use for the khimar is over the head, drawing the ends of it over the bosoms is the normal way that the verse is translated.

Some people go to the extent of face cover. To work out the finer details one must resort to hadith.

As far as verbally say the ‘hair’ must be covered I can’t say I have knowledge of it, but what I have read is that one of his companions said that Muhammad (SAW) showed with his fingers the outline of the external ‘hijab’ boundary for women. The face and hands were not included in it.
