The division of support v/s opposition for any group has always been there in both army and ISI. Whether its taliban or OBL or something else. Its a matter of which faction comes over which one. Just few years back there were a colonel a bunch of corps were caught for their links to terrorists but this whole situation of OBL was different. Apparently, some from the top brass wanted to keep him alive and safe somewhere and keep bargaining with the west and pull as many big $$$ as possible on the name of hunt for the most wanted man on earth. I just hope they dont repeat this mistake ever again.

Minting dollars from the US is one explanation, the other is that Saudis were paying for him to be kept in detention so as to keep him away from mischief. Being an old/frail person he was of no utility to anyone. According to the article that I posted above, he had no role in the operational activities of AQ when he was killed. The deal was that the US would kill their man discretely and later announce that he was killed in a drone strike, but the plan was scuttled when one blackhawk helicopter crashed during this operation. Obama needed this operation as a reelection gimmick. Anyways the rest is history.
