It is Kannada festival marking beginning of Hindu year, ugadi is celebrated as first day of first month, Chaitra:), Punjabis call it Baisakhi, Sindhi celebrate it as Cheti Chand etc

It is celebrated as new year and harvesting of Wheat crop begins:)
